COMMUNITY PREVENTION SPECIALIST 1

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a skilled professional position designed to work under the direction of the Deputy Commissioner of Mental Health or Student Assistance Supervisor. The incumbent will be involved in overall community prevention planning and delivery of services to various community providers; maintains and distributes materials to youth/families, schools and community agencies. This position will focus on educating and deterring youth from using substances by working with parents and other community members. The incumbent will also develop and implement environmental strategies in an effort to reduce risk factors and build protective factors across the community.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

Develops, maintains and assures availability of resource materials;

Work with local community groups on coalition building and education on prevention;

Work with school personnel to consult with and provide education on chemical dependency prevention; work with high risk youth for assessment, short term intervention and referral;

Meet with parents and make appropriate agency referrals;

Coordinate parent involvement programs in the community; including evidenced based Parenting Education;

Establish liaisons with other substance abuse prevention personnel on a local, county and state level; establish liaisons with other county departments, participate in collaborative meetings;

Develop and implement environmental substance abuse strategies community wide.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: It is essential that the incumbent have the capacity to establish and maintain relationships with individuals with the Department, with other county departments and a variety of educational and community agencies. This position demands excellent verbal and written communication skills. Possess good clinical skills and expertise in various treatment modalities, good working knowledge of illicit substances and issues related to chemical dependency. Knowledge of human development and personality theory and group dynamics. Ability to develop and implement model interventions utilizing OASAS research, within school and community programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from a graduate school approved by the New York State Department of Education with a Master's Degree in Health Education, Social Work, Nursing Psychology, Education or related field with 4 years of experience in a mental health, prevention or addiction treatment program.
