Job Summary:
Under the supervision of the Parks Manager, assists with the operation of and performs day to day activities for the general maintenance of the county parks, grounds, buildings and trails.
Provides skilled, semi-skilled and manual labor to safely operate equipment to maintain highways, bridges, roads, parks, county properties, and rights-of-way. Performs maintenance, diagnostics and minor repairs of vehicles and equipment. On an as requested basis, assists with the maintenance operations of snow and ice control, which includes snow plowing and operating heavy equipment. Subject to a 24/7 callout for all types of highway maintenance issues
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other responsibilities and duties may be assigned.
- In coordination with the Parks Manager, directs daily work and leads the work activities for Parks Maintenance Workers.
- Assists in training, instructing, and supervising Park Maintenance Workers in proper use and/or maintenance of tools, equipment, chemicals and related safety procedures.
- Assists in the planning of proposed park construction and maintenance projects including preparation of plans, estimates of material and labor costs, and project work schedules.
- Directs Park Maintenance Workers and performs daily functions including the construction, repair and maintenance of park facilities, buildings, grounds and designated trails.
- Assists in the purchase of materials, supplies, tools and equipment needed for the construction, repair and maintenance of assigned county facilities.
- Maintains park facilities, grounds, buildings, campgrounds and trails so they are kept neat, clean and safe. This includes but is not limited to lawn mowing, spraying weeds, landscaping, building maintenance & repairs, inspecting & cleaning shelters, restrooms and campsites.
- Assists with diseased and hazardous tree removal and tree trimming.
- Provides routine patrol of the park system and enforces park policies and rules. This may include seasonal evenings, weekends and holidays as assigned.
- Assists with monitoring park reservations.
- Attends seminars and trainings related to the field.
- Safely operates light and heavy equipment to perform road and bridge maintenance functions, when requested.
- Drives truck to transport crew and equipment to work site.
- When requested, drives tandem axle truck for snow removal equipped with adjustable snowplow, wing, sander, and underbody. Operates snow blower.
- Drives tractor with mower attachment for grass, weed, and brush control.
- Operate front end loader, backhoe, tandem truck, snow blower, water truck, skid loader with attachments, clean ditches, etc.
- Check roads for hazards.
- Picking up litter in parks and along parks roads.
- Spray and mow weeds and trees.
- Upkeep of various county shops and grounds.
- Tree cutting and brush control in county parks and along county roads using chainsaws, high lift, woodchipper, skid loader and trucks.
- Thawing out or unplugging culverts using required equipment.
- Performs equipment inspections as required by Minnesota law and county policy.
- Performs routine maintenance on all types of light and heavy equipment.
- Excellent customer service skills, especially with individuals utilizing the county park system.
- Primary work location may vary by season.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualification Requirements:

Education and/or Experience:
High school graduate or equivalent (GED) and two years of experience in park maintenance, landscape or construction trades or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Supervisory experience preferred.
Language Skills:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information to customers, clients, park personnel and other employees of the organization.
Mathematical/Computer Skills:
Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100' s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
Ability to efficiently operate Microsoft Windows computer programming.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to carry out written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to understand and follow policies and procedures.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Minnesota Class B CDL driver’s license
Must be registered with the FMCSA Clearinghouse
Ability to obtain within 1 year of employment:
Noncommercial Pesticide Applicator License
First aid and CPR training
Other Skill and Abilities:
Skilled in operating heavy and light trucks and equipment, hand equipment and other miscellaneous department tools, materials and equipment. Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with department personnel, other county employees, and the public.
Ability to manage own priorities and schedule in area of responsibility or assigned geographic area. Ability to represent the county in a professional manner to all internal and external contacts when doing the county's business.
