BUFFALO'S FIRE REPORT FOR AMERICA ENVIRONMENTAL REPORTER

Report for America
ND Full Time
POSTED ON 4/7/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/7/2025

Buffalo’s Fire is the online news publishing division of the Indigenous Media Freedom Alliance, a nonprofit media organization based in Bismarck, North Dakota, that covers American Indian communities in North Dakota and along the Missouri River.

They seek an experienced environmental reporter to report on the Missouri River basin, including tribal nations along the river. Tribal Nations along the Missouri River have a long and storied history with the sacred water of the Missouri, from the Dakota Access Pipeline protests at the Standing Rock Reservation, just south of Bismarck, N.D., to a series of dam projects north and south of the NoDAPL protest sites. This reporter will tell the stories of how agriculture and multiple uses along the Missouri River basin environmentally impact tribes. The impact of the energy industry, particularly regarding the hydraulic Fracking industry’s influence on the Missouri River, particularly around the Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota, will be explored.

This position is part of the Report for America reporting corps and the Mississippi River Basin Project sponsored by the University of Missouri. The reporter will be based in Bismarck, N.D. Salary is commensurate with experience, but this position demands a reporter with at least five years of experience - salary range from $52,000 to $62,000 plus benefits.  Environmental reporting experience is preferred.

Please send resumes and three recent story clips to Jodi Spotted Bear, Founder-Director of the Indigenous Media Freedom Alliance, jodi@imfreedomalliance.org , and Teri Hayt, Director of Corps Excellence, Report for America, thayt@reportforamerica.org .

The deadline for applications is January 6, 2025.
