Primary Therapist/Substance Abuse Counselor

POSITION: Primary Therapist/Substance Abuse Counselor

SUPERVISED BY: Clinical Director

POSITION/INDIVIDUALS SUPERVISED: None

POSITION PURPOSE:

The purpose of the Primary Therapist is to assist in providing a safe environment for individuals while they are in treatment. The Primary Therapist facilitates the clinical process, answers inquiries, and assists patients adjusting to the program routine. The Therapist holds daily groups, conducts individual counseling sessions, documenting progress in the clinical record and assists the patients with case management activities as needed.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS

1. EDUCATION/LICENSURE: Licensed in the State of Maryland as an addictions counselor, social worker, or professional counselor:

Current licensure in Maryland:

CSC-AD or CAC-AD; or
LMSW or LCSW-C; or
LGPC or LCPC; or

LGADC or LCADC

If a candidate is a recovering alcoholic or addict, must have two-years of continuous sobriety prior to hire.

2. EXPERIENCE: At least twelve months experience working in the substance abuse field. Experience conducting group sessions.

3. KNOWLEDGE AND TRAINING

Knowledge of addiction and mental health issues.

4. REQUIRED AT TIME OF HIRE:
Knowledge of community healthy resources that support life improvement in physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health, economic security, employment, positive social and family interdependence and positive cultural identity including:

Knowledge of referral procedures and admittance criteria for health care and community providers.

Ability to network and collaborate with healthcare and other social and cultural agencies that can provide services to the patients and families.

Basic knowledge of 12-Step Recovery Programs

Knowledge and competency in problem solving, stress management, ethics and team building.

Knowledge of alcohol and other drugs that includes:

- Alcohol and addictive drugs and their physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual impact on the individual.

- Alcohol and addictive drugs and their impact on the family.

- Ability to determine if a medical emergency exists and to take appropriate action, when necessary.

- Knowledge of emergency procedures used in case of alcohol and/or drug overdose.

- Knowledge of the stages of alcohol and other drug withdrawals and ability to take appropriate action at each stage.

- Knowledge of Federal, State and

- Municipal laws and/or regulations that regulate the treatment of alcoholism and drug addiction, including:

  • Confidentiality
  • Patient Rights
  • Professional Code of Ethics
  • Discrimination o Knowledge of airborne and blood borne pathogens (TB, HIV, AIDS, HB) and risk reduction methodologies and the use of universal precautions. o Flexibility to adapt to schedule changes and assumption of responsibilities not delineated in the job description which are related to work as a member of an addiction treatment team.

SPECIFIC AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY TO POSITION

1. Completes biopsychosocial intake on clients within appropriate timeframe.

2. Completes the client's treatment plan within appropriate timeframe.

3. Counsel clients or patients, individually and/or in group sessions, to assist in overcoming dependencies, adjusting to life, and making positive changes.
4. Perform clinical assessments and adjust treatment plan as needed.
5. De-escalates AMA/ACA and other patient problems.
6. Conducts and documents daily groups for all patients.

7. Provide Case Management of patients' needs including phone calls and letters for the continuance treatment.

8. Documents all activities in the patient medical record and files all notes in the charts on a daily basis for UR purposes.

9. Maintains inventory of AA/NA literature and patient orientation manual with distribution to all patients.
10. Counsel family members to assist them in understanding, dealing with, or supporting clients or patients
11. Attends all staff meetings to enhance communication with operational and other staff regarding program and client issues.
12. Participate in required staff training.
13. Ensure clinical licensure and all requirements are up to date.
14. Complete all assigned paperwork in a neat, accurate and timely manner.
15. Complete incident reports according to policy in a timely, accurate manner.
16. Communicate with other staff as necessary to promote quality patient care.
17. Participate in maintaining clean, properly supplied and efficient work areas.
18. Observe and report safety, maintenance problems.
19. Interact appropriately with patients, showing them respect while maintaining boundaries.
20. Exercise sound professional judgment and seek assistance as necessary to effectively manage patient behavior.
21. Protect the privacy of all patient information in accordance with agency privacy policies, procedures and practices, as required by federal and state law, and in accordance with general principle of professionalism as a health care provider. to treatment, payment or other agency operations.

23. Expected to report, without the threat of retaliation, any concerns regarding agency policies and procedures on patient privacy and any observed practices in violation of the policy to their supervisor.

24. Performs other duties assigned.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $55,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
