MAUNAKEA RANGER SUPPORT ASSISTANT – ID# 224858.

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Center for Maunakea Stewardship (CMS), administered by Maunakea Shared Services (MKSS), located at Halepōhaku, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $3,800 - $4,100/Mon.

DUTIES: Performs a variety of support services for the rangers including traffic management, vehicle and equipment upkeep, ordering supplies, and providing safety information and advice on how to safely visit Maunakea. Assists rangers in conducting tours of University of Hawai’i (UH) Managed lands on Maunakea and areas covered by cooperative agreements between UH and adjacent landowners. Initiates communication to educate visitors, observatory staff, and others about the cultural, natural, and scientific significance of the Mauna. Maintains and submits a daily log to supervisors. Attends training classes and staff meetings as necessary to ensure proficiency in work duties. Work schedule regularly consists of 14-hour days which include late evenings, early mornings, weekends and holidays. Permitted, but not required to overnight at Halēpohaku during shifts. Expected to work overtime during staff shortages, inclement weather, emergencies, and special events. Must provide own transportation to Hilo or Halepōhaku as designated. Work station is Halepōhaku.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

EXPERIENCE

At least six (6) months of experience in customer service.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of the cultural, environmental, geological and scientific importance of Maunakea. Knowledge of how visitors can safely visit Maunakea.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to communicate interpretive and safety information to the public in an informative, interesting and respectful manner. Ability to use email, Internet, and standard office computer applications. Good teamwork skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with internal and external audiences. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission on unpaved roads and ice or snow-covered pavement. Must be able to follow MKSS Driving Safety Policy. Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain certification immediately upon hire or within the first month of hire before assisting with tours on UH Managed Lands) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must possess Certification in First Responder/Emergency Medical Response (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within twelve (12) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Majority of the work is performed outdoors under a range of environmental conditions and at times in adverse weather conditions. Ability to stand for a prolonged period of time. Ability to hike for long distances over rugged, uneven terrain under inclement weather conditions to assist injured victims at high altitudes. Ability to backpack, lift, and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination on an ongoing basis.

POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT

As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies, procedures, and trainings and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies, procedures, and trainings. Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience working on Maunakea or other high-altitude situations for extended periods of time. Experience as a lifeguard, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or equivalent position. Possess knowledge of key issues concerning the Maunakea CMP and HAR Chapters 20-26.Certificates and trainings in other safety related disciplines. Formal training in Hawaiian studies. Experience handling emergency situations.
