MKFRP RESTORATION TECHNICIAN – ID# 225064.

Regular, Full-Time, Limited-Term (not to exceed twelve (12) months in duration), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Mauna Kea Forest Restoration Project (MKFRP), located on the Island of Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY: $4,376/Mon.

DUTIES: Works with staff and community volunteers in restoring and monitoring native vegetation on Mauna Kea. Vegetation restoration will be guided by the principles of adaptive management and experimentation. Implements restoration activities in collaboration with project staff, other partners, and with volunteers. Drives project vehicles up Mauna Kea to access sites. Maintains predator control system (feral cats, mongoose, and rats) as part of endangered species protection program. Assists with monitoring of restoration trials, plantings, and invasive plants. Provides summaries and analysis of monitoring data. Implements and assesses techniques for restoring and managing native vegetation, and builds appreciation for natural resources and ecological processes within the local community through public participation in restoration activities.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biological Sciences, Natural Resource Management, Geography or Hawaiian Studies with basic, or related Biological courses.

EXPERIENCE

One to three (1-3) years of experience in or related to conservation or managing natural resources. Experience needs to be documented well and acquired under the employment of an academic institution, governmental agency, private company, or non-profit organization in the appropriate field.

KNOWLEDGE

Good knowledge of biology and Hawaiian natural history. Working knowledge of herbicide application word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to learn to recognize and correctly identify plant species. Ability to effectively communicate and adhere to safety protocols. Ability to use map and compass to navigate in remote areas. Ability to use Global Positioning System (GPS) units to document plant locations, monitoring plots, and transects. Ability to take detailed field notes and develop systems for data collection. Ability to lead field assistants, and oversee interns and volunteers and to coordinate field projects and data collection. Ability to safely apply herbicides, given appropriate training. Ability to maintain and repair ungulate exclusion fences. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Ability to carry loads up to sixty (60) pounds assisted and hike up to ten (10) miles a day. Ability to camp in remote areas for up to five (5) days a week. Must be able to work at 11,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:

Fieldwork related to natural resources management and conservation biology, with emphasis on monitoring and management of native and non-native plants in Hawai‘i. Knowledge of endangered species in Hawai‘i. Knowledge and experience with Hawaiian forest birds.
