PCSU FORESTRY FIELD PROJECT SUPERVISOR – ID# 225212.

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), working in support of the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), Forest Management Section, located in Maui, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY: $4,536/Mon.

DUTIES: Plans, coordinates, implements, and manages the PCSU Maui Nui Landscape Conservation Project. Directs and manages field crew with minimal supervision, performing various resource management and monitoring activities. These include, but are not limited to, collection and analysis of technical field data using standardized methods to collect information about distribution of native and alien plants and animals within and around designated management units, controlling alien plants with chemical and mechanical means, control of feral animals, maintenance and construction of fences, seed collection and propagation, outplanting, driving project vehicles to work sites, and other duties as assigned. Orders and maintains project equipment within program budget and writes quarterly updates, annual reports and work plans. Supervises Field Project staff. Oversees volunteers. Coordinates projects in propagating, out planting, and monitoring native plants. Ensures that field operations follow and adhere to appropriate safety and operation policies/guidelines. Oversees responsible wildlife trapping in rugged field environments. Records detailed field data and spatial information and inputs data into Global Positioning System (GPS) and computers for analysis.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Natural Resources Management, Forestry, Biology, Zoology, Botany, Conservation Biology, Environmental Science or in a Biological Science with at least two (2) non-introductory courses in Biology, Botany, Zoology, or Ecology. (High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and three (3) years of experience may substitute for an Associate’s Degree.).

EXPERIENCE

Two to four (2-4) years of experience in fieldwork/data collection related to conservation/natural resource protection. Must have prior experience supervising paid staff and attendance in supervisory training programs. At least one (1) year of supervisory experience.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of biology and Hawaiian natural history. Working knowledge of word processing, database and spreadsheet applications. Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and mapping programs and imagery.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to learn to recognize and correctly identify approximately 200 plants species. Ability to use map and compass to navigate in dense forests. Ability to use GPS units to document rare element locations and remote monitoring plots and transects. Ability to take detailed field notes and develop systems for data collection. Ability to lead field assistants and volunteers and to coordinate field projects and data collection. Ability to safely apply herbicides. Ability to construct, maintain and repair ungulate exclusion fences. Ability to hunt feral animals using traps and dogs. Ability to work independently. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No- Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course within three (3) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Able to lift up to sixty (60) pounds assisted. Ability to camp in remote areas for four to five (4-5) days in a week.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:

Previous experience propagating and out planting native plants. Previous fieldwork related to natural resources management and conservation biology, with emphasis on monitoring and management of feral animals and nonnative plants in Hawai‘i. Experience with hunting. Knowledge of endangered species in Hawai‘i.
