The Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene, Inc. (RFMH) is seeking a qualified candidate for a full-time Suicide Prevention Research Scientist in the New York State Office of Mental Health's (NYS OMH) Suicide Prevention Center of New York (SPCNY).
OMH's SPCNY is the lead entity in NYS suicide prevention. Its mandate is to advance implementation of the State's Suicide Prevention Plan, providing a range of resources and technical assistance to community partners. The incumbent will serve in the role of clinical and public health expert in suicide prevention. As a suicide prevention expert, and Director of Implementation at OMH SPCNY, the individual will supervise and direct an implementation team providing technical assistance to grant sites and partners aimed at the integration of suicide care best practices across the entire suicide prevention portfolio, including in schools, health and behavioral health systems (aka "Zero Suicide"), workplace and other community setting.
This position is an RFMH Research Scientist V title and is responsible for formulating and conducting a systematic, research-based approach to solving problems, which have been recognized as exceptionally difficult. The incumbent would be expected to make contributions to the field by leading implementation of SPCNY grant and non-grant initiatives and working with a team to disseminate and scale best practices in suicide prevention across New York State.
Candidates should have at least (3) years of supervisory experience, along with strong supervisory, management and writing skills, as well as a scientifically rigorous background that may come from conducting clinical research and/or community level implementation of evidenced-based programs, preferably in suicide prevention or a related field. Suicide prevention is a complex field with an evolving evidence base. A working knowledge of the suicide prevention literature is necessary, including familiarity with best practices in screening, assessment, and interventions.
The position is Albany based; however, candidates from other parts of NYS would be considered with the stipulation that a minimum of 2 days of travel to Albany per month would be required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership, expertise and technical assistance regarding suicide prevention to staff and partner organizations, including around the integration of suicide prevention in health and behavioral healthcare systems, often referred to as the "Zero Suicide" model.
- The implementation and management of suicide prevention grants.
- Develop and communicate a strategic vision for the implementation of grants to both grant team personnel and external partners, including oversight of all written communication and supporting materials
- Complete and submit in a timely manner all grant sponsor required documentation and reporting, including grant implementation progress and fiduciary responsibilities
- Create and execute annual contracts with grant partners and consultants, including delineation of clear and specific scopes of work, in order to meet grant goals
- Provide expertise, direction, and oversight of grant team technical assistance and implementation support delivered to grant partners
- Coordinate the implementation of suicide prevention best practices across a range of clinical and non-clinical sites
- Routinely communicates with and engage strategic partners around grant deliverables
- Apply for, secure, and manage competitive federal and private suicide prevention grants in the Suicide Prevention Center, within the larger OMH Office of Prevention Health Initiatives
- Lead and coordinate suicide prevention implementation research related activities at SPCNY as evidenced by manuscript submission to peer-reviewed journals
- Other projects as required by the Director of the OMH Suicide Prevention Center of New York
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree in related field (e.g. MSW in clinical or macro; Mental Health Counseling; Public Health, etc.) 6 years of suicide prevention project management/implementation experience OR
- Doctorate in above related field may substitute for one year of experience.
- At least (3) years supervisory experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Doctorate in Clinical Psychology 3 years suicide prevention project management/implementation experience
- Experience in clinical leadership and management
- Excellent written, oral and organizational skills
- Demonstrated competence in team management
- Experience and technical competence in writing, implementing, and managing grants
- Experience and technical competence in clinical research in suicide prevention as evidenced by authorship of at least one peer reviewed journal article in the field
- Experience in the training and delivery of suicide prevention best practices/evidence-based practices
- Experience supervising staff
