JOB TITLE: Senior Mechanical Designer
Job Description
Senior mechanical designers are in charge of creating effective mechanical designs and developing mechanical concepts and drawings to meet project requirements. They utilize complex software tools to make technical designs that fulfill mechanical specifications, and these individuals must possess strong communication skills to facilitate the design process and reach project completion. Senior mechanical designers analyze sketches and blueprints for feasibility and compliance, as well as use a computer with computer-aided design (CAD) software to make modifications to existing designs.
The senior mechanical designer's main duties include anticipating and resolving mechanical design issues, coaching junior designers, and participating in training sessions when new technology is introduced into the design process. Additionally, they participate in the data collection and field verification phases. They strive to maintain high quality productions and assist other senior technical staff with recommendations on design requirements. They review and approve mechanical drawings, and manage project schedules.
An associate’s degree in mechanical design technology and previous experience are required for this position. Senior mechanical designers must be able to create efficient mechanical blueprints, use relevant computer software (such as AutoCAD and Inventor software), and have excellent problem-solving skills. They must work well in a team setting, as well as on their own with minimal supervision.
Mechanical Designer Duties
Mechanical designers typically begin a project by meeting with project managers, engineers, and clients to understand the needs and requirements for an upgrade or new product or mechanical system. Once materials and specifications have been determined, designers begin using CAD software to plan and develop project drawings.
Other Senior Mechanical Designer duties include;
- Participate in design team process and generate ideas for product design.
- Create meticulous documentation for each project's requirements and design.
- Generate CAD general arrangement and erection drawings.
- Generate CAD detail fabrication drawings.
- Generate CAD proposal level drawings.
- Provide estimates for time, cost, performance, and materials.
- Travel to job sites to take field measurements and gather information for design purposes.
- Travel to job site to assist field labor in installing equipment
- Travel to fabricator shops to perform dimensional checks for quality control
- Reproducing and archive designs.
- Coordinate work flow for junior designers.
- Check drawings and work of junior designers.
