About Us
Respite Care Charleston (RCC) is a nonprofit organization providing support and services to individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Our services include support groups, half-day memory care, early memory loss programs and one-on-one caregiver consultations.
RCC’s half-day memory care programs are offered throughout Charleston County, providing dementia caregivers time “off” from their responsibilities and giving their loved ones with dementia the opportunity for fun and engaging social activities in a safe, dementia-friendly setting. Caregivers drop off their loved ones at our program sites, and our staff leads activities, facilitates interactions, serves meals and occasionally assists with basic needs like toileting. No medical care is provided.
Job Purpose
The program assistant is responsible for assisting the program coordinator in engaging members of the program in planned activities while ensuring the safety, enrichment, and quality care of program members as well as other responsibilities outlined below.
RCC currently has openings for the following location from 9:15 a.m.-2:15 p.m. Additional sites and days of the may be available if the applicant is interested.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Engage members in program activities, encouraging independence and optimal levels of functioning based on individual member’s dementia progression
- Set-up and break-down facilities before and after program according to site specifications, including re-arranging tables and chairs, sweeping, removing trash, and cleaning kitchens and restrooms
- Assist with personal care of members, including feeding, toileting, ambulation and seat-to-standing transitions
- Monitor behavior of members (i.e. wandering, agitation, listlessness) and redirect, comfort and/or provide other appropriate interventions
- Assist with preparation and clean-up of balanced, nutritious meals
- Provide the program coordinator with updates/observations regarding members and caregivers in accordance with the confidentiality/privacy policy of the organization
- Monitor stock of supplies in restrooms, kitchen and program storage and notify program coordinator of low inventory levels
- Provide occasional assistance with fundraising, marketing, community outreach, administration and other functions related to the overall mission of Respite Care Charleston
Qualifications
- Requires compassion, patience, flexibility, creativity and commitment to serving individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia and their caregivers
- Experience working with senior citizens and/or those with dementia and/or experience in healthcare-related fields is strongly preferred
- Successful candidates will be able to maintain a high level of energy and a positive attitude during sometimes stressful conditions and to exhibit superior customer service skills when interacting with members and their caregivers
- Will be required to receive and maintain certification in first aid and CPR and successfully complete other dementia-care specific training(s)
- Should be comfortable working with service animals, young children, college students and others engaged in the program setting
- COVID and flu vaccinations are strongly encouraged
Working Conditions
- Should be comfortable working with individuals with memory loss and cognitive impairment, certified therapy animals, young children, adult students and others engaged in the program setting
- Must have access to reliable transportation
- Must be able to regularly stand and walk for 4-6 hours at a time and to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to assist with seat-to-standing transitions, ambulation and toileting
- Must be able to successfully pass a background check
