The Child Development Assistant Teacher is responsible for ensuring the daily care of each child and helping the Lead Teacher maintain a fun and interactive learning environment within developmental childcare. This individual will assist the Lead Teacher in implementing the provided curriculum. The Child Development Assistant Teacher works with the Lead Teacher to ensure learning is fun and interactive, positive guidance is established and enforced and the children’s basic needs are met. This person will assist the organization in achieving our mission of enhancing the stability and nurturing opportunities of families caring for children with special needs.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES :
Implement plans designed by the teacher. Assist with lesson planning and facilitating daily schedule.
Assist with arranging space, equipment, and materials in the classroom and outdoors.
Assist with maintaining a clean, orderly child-centered environment.
Assist with maintaining up-to-date and accurate administrative paperwork including meal counts, incident / illness reports, etc.
Assume responsibility of the teacher in her absence.
Assume responsibility for projects as delegated by the teacher / director.
Report all incidents / emergencies to the teacher / director.
Administer general care, such as toileting, feeding, changing diapers, etc.
Actively engage with the children and encourage them in all domains of development.
Work on developmentally appropriate skills as they apply to each unique child (i.e., alphabet, numbers, colors, sounds, sitting up, tracking objects, community skills, daily living skills and educational skills, etc.)
Facilitate the modification of activities for children with disabilities to ensure full participation (seek guidance when needed).
Formally observe children’s activities and progress; document and share information regarding children’s experiences with Lead Teacher.
Utilize appropriate behavior management techniques and use positive reinforcement to encourage and foster appropriate behaviors in children. Coregulate children’s behavior through positive discipline / guidance techniques in a trauma-informed manner.
Use descriptive language to guide children (i.e., ‘put your feet on the floor’, ‘put your bottom on the chair / on the mat’, ‘our hands belong to ourselves’ instead of ‘get down’, ‘sit’, ‘stop hitting’ respectively or other ‘no’, and ‘stop’ language).
Engage and effectively communicate with persons from diverse cultures and communities and different groups, including children, parents / guardians, agency colleagues, donors, support staff members, supervisors, administrators, and persons from the legal and judicial system.
Supervise children at all times. Ensure that the care and supervision of children are of the utmost concern, with attention to health and safety. Follow active supervision guidelines to include scanning / counting, listening, and anticipating children’s behaviors.
Respect each child and their family’s culture.
Show affection, respect, and interest in each child and treat them with dignity and respect at all times, in all circumstances.
Demonstrate professionalism, engagement, and kindness to all children and families regardless of race, religion, nationality, abilities, familial status or make up, etc.
Develop and maintain a supportive rapport with parents / guardians.
Maintain a professional working atmosphere and confidentiality of information about staff, families, and coworkers. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Lead Teacher, Site Supervisor, and / or Director.
Required Qualifications :
- Minimum of two years of direct care experience and / or childcare experience
- At least 18 years of age
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid Texas driver’s license
- Ability to pass all background checks
- Ability to complete paid new hire orientation training
- Experience working with children with developmental disabilities preferred

Starting salary : $15.00 / hour with consideration for education and experience
