Job Overview
The Back up Advocate plays a crucial role in supporting survivors of domestic and sexual abuse in need of assistance. This position involves working on Response's crisis helpline outside of office hours, primarily nights and weekends. The Back up Advocate will provide crisis intervention and support services during their shift on the helpline. You must have a cell phone and be available by phone through an entire 12 hour shift. Pay - $40 per 12 hour shift. Back up advocates take one week per month (of 9 shifts) = $360.
Qualifications:
- Complete Response’s in-person and online 30-hour training (bonus provided upon completion of training and first week of work)
- Ability to answer and calmly navigate potentially stressful calls
- Compassionate and empathetic listener
- Desire to learn and grow to better serve our community
Responsibilities:
- Be available and in service throughout the duration of your shift
- Answer calls and provide short-term crisis intervention and safety planning for domestic and sexual abuse survivors
- Set aside biases about survivors with different identities than yourself
- Offer applicable and culturally sensitive community resources and referrals
- Assess severity of housing needs and set up short term temporary stays when suitable
- Communicate call information and relay it to full time Response staff
- Maintain caller confidentiality outside of the Response organization
- Contact law enforcement when applicable
This position is essential for ensuring that survivors receive the necessary support whenever they choose to reach out. The ideal candidate will be compassionate, dedicated and flexible.
