Job Title: CAMP COUNSELOR SUBSTITUTE
Department: Parks & Recreation - Camps
Reports To: Recreation Manager
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Salary Grade: Seasonal/Hourly
Date: 01/01/2025


Purpose:
The Camp Counselor Substitute, under the guidance of the Lead Camp Counselor, provides program leadership and supervision of all children aged 4-16 on an as-needed basis, executes policies and procedures, is responsible for the health and safety of children, adheres to state licensing, reports parent concerns and complaints, implements daily schedule, and creates alternative activities. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Lead Camp Counselor or Lead Camp Counselor Substitute.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists with overseeing camp enrollment of 24-96 children/per session with ages ranging from 4-16.

  • Leads by example and is a positive role model for all campers and peers.

  • Assists with pre-camp planning by developing activities that give children the opportunity to participate in activities that are both recreational and educational. Attends all staff training and meetings as assigned.

  • Assists with planning and participates in all camp activities with a positive attitude.

  • Is responsible for proper care and storage of all camp equipment and facilities.

  • Monitors the health and safety of all campers and staff. Follows all VA State Licensing requirements.

  • Assists the Lead Camp Counselor with maintaining accurate program records, including incident reports, group binder, and daily attendance.

  • Uses group management skills to engage all children in daily activities.

  • Helps children and staff resolve conflicts appropriately. Intervenes if children are having behavior issues.

  • Maintains awareness and compliance of all job-related policies in employee handbook.

Education and Experience –
Must be 16 years of age; experience working with children and/or other prior camp experience preferred.

Computer Skills
– Basic computer knowledge, including Microsoft Office and ADP.

Other Skills and Abilities
– Experience preferred in nature, recreational games, science, sports, art, aquatics, technology, and songs/music.

Other Qualifications
– Current CPR and First Aid Certification; documentation of physical examination and TB skin test; clear the local jurisdiction requirements for criminal background and fingerprinting; must meet the county/state licensing requirements, as well as in-person training; must have the critical skill of being able to relate to parents and children and have a positive, creative attitude; must be able to work as a team member; must be able to effectively communicate with children and parents; must understand RA’s mission and vision, and be committed to working with diverse population.

Decision-Making & Independence Exercised:
Describes the level of authority and/or responsibility to make decisions, develop and revise policies & procedures, make official commitments on behalf of the Association, etc.

Employee follows established policies and procedures; formulates, interprets, or implements management policies or operating practices as required with regard to office operations and job responsibilities; exercises initiative, independent judgment and advanced administrative skills and represents the Association before public audiences as a spokesperson, or in handling complaints, arbitrating disputes or resolving grievances with regard to office operations and job duties/tasks as required.

- Computers, iPads, printer, copy machine, and general office equipment.

Contacts:
- Frequent contact with Association members and other visitors for the purpose of providing or exchanging information.

This job is performed in an indoor/outdoor school age children’s setting. Requires working in all weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment can become raised. Must be able to work scheduled hours.
