What are the responsibilities and job description for the Community Compliance Inspector position at Reston Association?
Purpose: Coordinates and carries out the administrative and inspections process in accordance with Reston Association’s governing documents. Supports the enforcement of standards, rules, and regulations by routinely conducting visual exterior inspections of properties and providing notifications and violation reports to property owners. General supervision is received from the Community Compliance Manager.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Performs exterior property inspections to ensure compliance with the Association’s Use and Maintenance Standards and Design Covenants by photographing all sides,
elements, and features of a unit and lot.
2. Clearly and accurately generates notifications and inspection reports to property owners for all inspections performed or as assigned, in accordance with the
Association’s governing documents, policies, and procedures.
3. Assists in the administration of the member complaints process by following established procedures, primarily by interpreting complaint forms, performing initial
complaint inspections, performing follow-ups as needed and escalating next steps to Community Compliance Coordinator.
4. Assists the post Design Review process by following established procedures of inspecting properties as assigned for conformance with previously issued Design
Review Board decisions.
5. Assists with follow up inspections by following established procedures of inspecting properties for conformance with the Association’s Use and Maintenance Standards and
Design Covenants.
6. Conducts neighborhood walk-throughs and provides support to Compliance Department staff and other Covenants staff, as assigned.
7. Self-manages workflow and follow up inspections based upon pre-set deadlines.
8. Maintains and applies working knowledge of the Association’s current standards, rules, and regulations.
9. Demonstrates responsibility and professionalism when handling sensitive compliance situations.
10. Always provides five-star customer service by attending to all calls and messages within department standards. Efficiently responds to inquiries from internal and
external customers for clarification or detail on inspection notifications and reporting. Maintains accurate records of all verbal and written communication exchanged with members.
11. Demonstrates exceptional attention to detail and high proficiency in administrative tasks.
12. Attends relevant training, as needed.
13. Performs other duties, projects, and responsibilities as assigned.
14. Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and Experience: Two to four year degree or equivalent from a four-year college or technical school with preferred coursework in a technical field similar to architecture, urban planning, engineering, construction management, etc. plus two to four years of related professional and administrative experience in architecture, planning, plan review, zoning compliance, facilities management, covenants compliance, property management, community associations, real estate, etc., or combination of education and work experience equivalency.
Computer Skills - To perform this job successfully, an individual must have keyboarding skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and database software. Must have experience with mobile mapping software. Experience with project management software preferred.
Other Skills and Abilities – Ability to maintain regular and reliable attendance and abide by established policies and procedures. Requires excellent written and verbal communication skills; skill in interpreting and applying governmental regulations. Must be detail-oriented and have superior customer service skills; must have knowledge of building materials and components, knowledge of planning policies and design principles, ability to interpret architectural blueprints and site plans; effective working in both a team-oriented environment and independently; ability to multi-task, prioritize work, and manage work; and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Availability to work overtime as needed.
Other Qualifications - Must possess a valid driver’s license and good driving record.
Decision-Making & Independence Exercised: Describes the level of authority and/or responsibility to make decisions, develop and revise policies & procedures, make official commitments on behalf of the Association, etc.
Employee will be required to interpret or implement management policies or operating practices; provide consultation or expert advice to management or the public or represent RA before public audiences as a spokesperson; investigate and resolve matters of significance on behalf of management and represent the Association in handling complaints or resolving grievances.
Tools Equipment & Machines Used: Requires continuous use of a computer as well as frequent use of a printer, telephone, and other office machines. Frequent operation of a motor vehicle. Must be able to use mobile applications for field use.
Contacts: Frequent contact with Association members, agents, architects, attorneys, vendors, and contractors for the purpose of advising, and providing and exchanging information. Also, has regular contact with management and other employees throughout the Association.
