OPHTHALMIC TECHNICIAN

Escorts patients into exam rooms and performs initial part of Ophthalmic examination for physician (H&P, VA, IOP, CVF, Pupils etc.). Performs ancillary testing such as Ophthalmic photography, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), A & B scans and others. Assists physician in minor in-office procedures. May also act as a scribe while the physician is examining patient. Performs other tasks that facilitate patient flow.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Review patient chart prior to exam to anticipate procedures and supplies or equipment that may be needed.
- Greet patients in a prompt, courteous and helpful manner, introduce self prior to eye examination
- Explain to patients what to expect from workup and physician exam
- Administer drops and prepare patient for exam, escort patient to appropriate area
- Complete a detailed patient history including past medical history, family history, medication history and chief complaint
- Perform appropriate tests as needed according to office policy and procedures (FA, FP, OCT, A scans, B scans, keratometry etc.)
- Assist back office procedure to ensure excellent patient/doctor workflow
- Educate patients in the office and on the telephone. Instruct patient both verbally and with written instructions regarding medications and treatment. Answer patient questions and follow up with patient as needed.
- Ensure appropriate documentation with all patient communication, fill out route slips with proper diagnosis and procedure, write out necessary prescriptions
- Complete patient triage calls, prescription requests, referring doctor requests
- Ensure appropriate supplies/equipment is available and functional for patient care according to office policy and procedures
- Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining medical records and operating procedures
- Attend required staff meetings and educational workshops as requested
- Maintain the strictest confidentiality according to HIPPA guidelines
- Prepare necessary paperwork for surgeries ordered by physicians according to office policy and procedures
- Provide assistance in all other areas in office when completion of above responsibilities permits to ensure smooth operation of the practice
- Maintain and stock all exam rooms, clean and maintain all instruments, ordering supplies as needed
- Provide assistance to administration in developing, implementing and maintaining office policies and procedures
- May provide maintenance and janitorial services of office and equipment.

JOB RELATIONSHIP
Does not supervise any other employee. Reports to and receives supervision from physician and/or administrator in all matters
HOURLY WAGE/SALARY
Start $14.00 DOE
Wages to be determined by level of experience and certification
