RETTEW, ranked among the top 500 engineering firms, is actively seeking a seasoned and committed Senior Bridge Engineer to be part of our Transportation Team. The successful candidate will oversee the technical aspects of various bridge projects, manage budgets and timelines, mentor and supervise junior staff, and foster relationships with both new and existing clients.
We're eager to find a Senior Bridge Engineer with exceptional skills, particularly in the innovative design and construction of composite steel and prestressed concrete bridges, and retaining walls and box culverts. Expertise in 3D modeling or finite element analysis software will definitely set you apart.
This position is available in our Pittsburgh, PA; Akron, OH; or Morgantown, WV offices. We are prepared to assist with relocation for the suitable candidate.
Responsibilities
Technical Responsibilities
- Provide a high-level of technical support on projects for internal and external clients.
- Provide senior technical oversight for multiple bridge design projects
- Deliver technical guidance, direction, and training in area of expertise to project team and across Teams or Practices.
- Develop and review complete project documents for conformity and quality assurance.
- Analyze complex engineering projects to determine design requirements, uncertainties, and constraints.
- Plan, develop, and coordinate the technical phases of a large project or a number of small projects with complex features.
- Perform research, conduct investigations, and draft reports and opinions.
- As an individual researcher or member of a project team, conduct complex or novel assignments requiring the development of new and/or improved techniques and procedures.
- As applicable, perform or oversee inventories, investigations, site visits, and studies.
- Keep informed of and share updates to standards, regulations, and best practices.
- Develop, prepare, and/or oversee the execution of applications, permits, and specifications for assigned projects.
- Review drawings and specifications for quality control (QC).
- As required, assist in planning, directing, and supervising the work of the project team.
- Maintain and advance knowledge in area(s) of expertise.
- As requested, assists in the selection of staff in area of expertise.
Program, Project and Task Management
- Perform QC on technical portions of projects.
- Manage project budgets and schedules to ensure timely completion and cost-effectiveness.
- As a technical specialist, develop and evaluate plans and criteria for a variety of projects and activities to be conducted by others.
- Develop and review complete project documents for conformity and quality assurance.
- Maintain a thorough knowledge of several functional areas and specialize in one.
- Serve as a technical advisor and knowledge resource on the project team.
- Evaluate and recommend new and/or improved ways to complete an assignment or project.
- Support the development of workplans with resource-loaded schedules, scopes, and budgets.
- Supervise assigned staff necessary to complete assignments.
- Contribute to the preparation proposals or obtain funding for engineering projects/programs.
- Meet with internal and external clients and attend meetings
- Assist in setting up and maintaining project-related files
- Cultivate relationships with new and existing clients to maintain and expand our client base
- Collaborate with other departments and teams within the company to ensure seamless project execution
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in bridge engineering
Management, Supervision, and Guidance
- Receive supervision and guidance from the Team Lead and Director relating to overall objectives, critical issues, new concepts, and policy matters.
- Receive direction the Team Lead and Directo on unusual conditions and developments.
- Provide mentored experience to direct reports, other engineers, and technical staff.
- Demonstrate professional attitudes relevant to the practice of engineering, including creativity, curiosity, flexibility, and dependability.
- As a technical advisor, coach, or mentor assists other members of the project team and designated staff.
Communication, Teamwork, and Leadership
- Possess advanced oral and written communication skills, including interpretation of complex technical and contractual language.
- Consider the needs of diverse project stakeholders.
- Lead project meetings and represents the organization in communications pertaining to broad aspects of engineering assignments.
- Analyze and select principles of formal communication, effective teamwork, and various pathways to developing leadership.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in bridge design and engineering
- Strong knowledge of bridge design software and tools; Microstation, Power InRoads, or OpenRoads is necessary.
- Demonstrated proficiency and technical knowledge in bridge engineering.
- Familiarity with PennDOT standards and design manuals is required.
- Familiarity with ODOT or WVDOH standards and ODOT prequalification is a bonus.
- Strong problem-solving skills; able to quickly identify solutions to technical issues.
