Maintenance Supervisor
SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS
The Sawmill Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the maintenance team and ensuring the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of all sawmill equipment and machinery. This role includes planning and coordinating preventive maintenance, responding to equipment breakdowns, supervising maintenance staff, and ensuring compliance with safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise daily maintenance activities, ensuring all equipment is operating safely and efficiently.
- Lead, train, and mentor a team of maintenance technicians and millwrights.
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules for sawmill equipment including saws, conveyors, kilns, planers, debarkers, and other production machinery.
- Coordinate repairs and troubleshooting during equipment failures or unplanned downtime.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, reports, and inventory of parts and tools.
- Ensure compliance with workplace safety regulations and promote a culture of safety and accountability.
- Work closely with production management to minimize downtime and improve overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
- Manage maintenance budgets, vendors, and contractors when necessary.
- Recommend and implement improvements for mechanical systems and equipment reliability.
- Respond to emergency maintenance situations after hours as needed.
- Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required; technical certification or associate’s degree in mechanical/electrical maintenance or a related field preferred.
- 5 years of industrial maintenance experience, preferably in a sawmill or wood products manufacturing environment.
- 2 years of supervisory or team lead experience.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
- Ability to read technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
- Excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
- Proficient with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Understanding of OSHA regulations and industrial safety practices.
- Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in a sawmill environment with exposure to loud noise, dust, and machinery.
- Requires standing, walking, climbing, and lifting (up to 50 lbs) on a regular basis.
- May involve shift work, weekends, or on-call availability.
SAFETY
- Follow all area/machine center specific safety regulations
- Wear all required personal protective equipment: hardhat, hearing protection, etc…
- Do not enter restricted areas
- Immediately remedy unsafe conditions, investigate, take appropriate actions/next steps and report to Human Resources/Safety Manager
- Request assistance when a task exceeds individual knowledge
- Visually inspect equipment and area before starting/operating
- Whenever possible, eliminate unsafe conditions as soon as possible
- Use Standard Lockout Procedures when appropriate for machine centers
- Use proper lifting technique by pushing, pulling and lifting with your legs and not your back
- Never approach a saw while it is still running
- Follow all other safety regulations as set forth by the company
