Job Summary:
The position of the Maintenance Worker Skilled is done for the purpose of improving student achievement by performing a variety of advanced journey-level skilled work in the maintenance, construction and repair of buildings and equipment in trade areas requiring local or state licensing. This is the advanced journey-level class. Positions at this level are distinguished from other maintenance workers in the department, by the level of responsibility and the complexity of duties assigned, and the requirement of maintaining local or state licensing. Employees perform the most complex maintenance repair work, requiring advanced journey-level skills in those trades which involve highly technical practices and repair procedures (i.e., electrical, plumbing, HVAC, finished carpentry, fire and life safety devices). Some employees may provide occasional and intermittent technical assistance to lower classifications.


Essential Job Functions - may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performing skilled complex maintenance, repair, and construction work in trades such as electrical, HVAC, boiler, plumbing, glazier, millwright, fire and life safety devices, and finished carpentry, including diagnosing, trouble-shooting and repairing.
  • Operating tools, equipment and machinery used in assigned trade area.
  • Preparing estimates of materials, equipment and labor required for assignments.
  • Performing maintenance and repair on tools and equipment used in trades work.
  • Ordering materials needed; maintaining records as necessary using District purchasing rules.
  • Managing, tracking, and organizing inventory of tools and parts.
  • Preparing reports and correspondence as required.
  • Preparing sketches and reading blue prints.
  • Performing routine maintenance, repair and inspections of buildings and building equipment and systems to operate at optimum levels.
  • Researching replacement parts, and/or new equipment to purchase for repair or replacement of equipment, that will be best for the District, financially and for long term use with the best overall savings.
  • Keeping current with changing regulations of federal, state and local agencies regulating trade area.
  • Performing heavy manual labor and general labor tasks. Access equipment on roofs, in attics, in basements, in tunnels and in tight spaces.
  • Responding to emergency situations, including inclement weather, for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns, both within and outside your trade area.
  • Assisting other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Attending internal and external training programs e.g. equipment/safety for the purpose of maintaining skills and adhering to District policies.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work teams.
  • Performing related duties consistent with job description and assignment.
  • May serve as mentor in approved apprenticeship program.
  • May coordinate and schedule the work of outside contractors.
  • May occasionally provide technical supervision over other maintenance personnel


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


Education and Training Required:

High School Diploma or GED.

Completion of approved state licensing/apprenticeship program.


Experience Required:

Three years of responsible skilled trades experience.


Knowledge of:

Principles and practices of assigned trade area.

Materials, tools and equipment used in assigned trade area.

Applicable safety rules, practices and procedures.


Skills to:

  • Operate standard office equipment and software used in the course of daily work including email and established facilities work order program.

Ability to:

  • Perform advanced journey-level skilled trades work.
  • Perform heavy manual labor.
  • Train others in technical skills.
  • Prepare written reports.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships during the course of assigned work.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Understand the organization and operation of the assigned department and of outside agencies as necessary, to assume assigned responsibilities;
  • Exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs;
  • Plan and provide excellent customer service;
  • Make independent decisions using sound judgment; communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively both orally and in writing to provide information and/or advise others;
  • Confer with school and department administrators to ensure proper understanding of operational requirements and customer needs;
  • Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with vendors and those contacted in the course of work;
  • Serve as a resource on issues involving Facilities Services;
  • Work with risk management staff to ensure building safety, security, emergency response, employee training and effective risk management practices;
  • Maintain regular and consistent attendance and punctuality;
  • Maintain flexibility to work with others in a variety of circumstances;
  • Foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including department staff;
  • Maintain flexibility to work with others in a variety of circumstances.

Significant Physical Abilities include: frequent twisting, bending, stooping, lifting all types of weight, occasionally up to 80 pounds. On feet all day or on back under machinery making repairs or performing maintenance on all District properties and systems. Must be able to work in attics or crawlspaces, roofs, tunnels, and climb ladders as needed.


Special Requirements

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver's license.

Positions may require licensure in assigned trade areas.

Oregon Fingerprint and criminal background check clearance.


Schedule: 260 work day calendar, 8 hrs per day
