Job Summary:
The Materials Manager is responsible for overseeing the warehousing, distribution, and management of materials required for the manufacturing of industrial products. This role ensures that materials are available in the right quantities and at the right time, in alignment with customer requirements and manufacturing schedules
Key Responsibilities:
Inventory Management:
- Work with business segment program managers to develop and implement strategies, methodologies, processes, and systems to optimize inventory levels.
- Monitor stock levels and demand to ensure that materials are replenished or ordered on time to support production schedules and customer orders.
- Determine purchase quantities and due dates in line material requirements and direct to procurement team members.
- Conduct regular inventory audits and counts such as cycle counting to ensure accurate material availability.
- Work with warehouse team members and business segment program managers to organize materials storage and location tracking system.
- Identify and implement improvements for material handling and storage.
Production Support:
- Collaborate with production managers and planners to align material requirements with production schedules.
- Ensure that materials are available and ready for use when needed in the manufacturing process.
- Monitor material usage to prevent shortages or overstocking.
Cost Control:
- Control material costs through effective sourcing and inventory management.
- Track and report on material costs and provide recommendations for cost-saving initiatives.
- Identify areas of material waste and implement process improvements to reduce waste and increase efficiency.
Quality Assurance:
- Ensure that all materials meet quality standards and specifications.
- Work with quality control teams to resolve any material defects or quality issues.
- Conduct regular evaluations of suppliers to ensure quality and reliability.
Team Management:
- Lead and manage a team of material handlers, and ship and receiving personnel.
- Provide training and development opportunities for team members.
- Set performance expectations, monitor team performance, and implement corrective actions as needed.
Continuous Improvement:
- Continuously review and improve material management and procurement processes.
- Stay current on industry trends and best practices in materials management and supply chain logistics.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Materials Management or a related field (preferred).
- Professional certifications such as Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) or Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) are a plus.
- Experience implementing lean supply chain management processes is required.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in materials management working with manufacturing type businesses.
- Flexible to work across multiple segment (value stream) teams, processes, and materials.
- Proficiency in MRP/ERP systems and inventory management software.
- Application of Kanban and other pull systems.
- Skills:
- Strong knowledge of materials management, inventory control, and procurement best practices.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Other Requirements:
- Attention to detail and a strong organizational mindset.
- Strong leadership abilities and the ability to motivate and manage a small team effectively.
