Nursing Quality and Safety Mgr

Summary:


Reports to the Associate Chief Nursing Officer to achieve divisional quality and safety initiatives. Collaborates with Nursing Leadership to develop and implement quality programs and processes to achieve departmental goals. Ensures evaluation and review of patient safety systems and programs unit-based quality related education and policies/procedures development that focus upon quality initiatives.


Responsibilities:


Identifies the needs of the department in collaboration with unit/divisional and departmental leadership.

Collaborates with the Clinical Manager (CM) to develop and implement a plan for creating a culture of patient safety. Conducts needs assessment; benchmarks with other institutions and mentors staff on creating and maintaining a culture of patient safety.

Ensures compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) and Department of Health (DOH) standards by rounding role modeling teaching/coaching and employing the corrective action process if necessary.

Provides visibility on all shifts to ensure staff are well versed on patient goals quality initiatives patient satisfaction and culture of safety.

Works in partnership with the Clinical Manager on providing input for the quality section of performance recognition summaries..

Develops action plans and provides training for individuals and groups to maintain a culture of quality and safety.

Acts as a clinical consultant/practitioner for all members of the health care team regarding basic complex and advanced nursing practice within assigned area.

Monitors policy and practice to ensure they match.

Identifies areas for clinical research and conducts clinical studies. Supports staff in using research findings in their practice.

Annually develops the unit quality plan and establishes goals for assigned areas that are aligned with the hospital�s overall initiatives and/or new program development. Develops a monthly quality dashboard that is distributed to the nursing division.

Monitors patient safety events conducts peer reviews and participates in tap roots for sentinel events DOH reportable events and any quality related issue requiring intense process review. Reports any significant findings at divisional/departmental/organizational level as appropriate.

Collaborates with appropriate multidisciplinary team members on research and evidence-based practice activities and developing new programs standards and practice protocols related to patient safety patient satisfaction and quality improvement.

Conducts ongoing quality audits monitoring and analysis to identify patterns and trends to re-evaluate strategy or assist Clinical Managers with individual data issues dissemination and facilitate discussion of quality related systems and processes with staff.

Reviews current professional literature. Critically interprets and selects research findings which are relevant to patient safety and quality improvement in order to provide sound evidence for practice decisions and projects.

Assists nurses in becoming familiar with the process for utilizing evidence-based research in practice and in the development of evidenced-based practice. Visibly disseminates research in all presentations and written materials.

Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

QUALIFICATIONS - EDUCATION:

Baccalaureate degree and master�s degree in nursing required.

Consideration will be given to internal candidates who are matriculated in a master�s degree program.

Must have current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

QUALIFICATIONS - EXPERIENCE

Minimum of three to five years relevant clinical experience with demonstrated leadership teaching and communication skills. Experience should exhibit an exceptional level of written and oral communication skill.

The ability to conceptualize develop and effect quality nursing services with a commitment to continuous quality improvement is essential.

Strong interpersonal/negotiation/mediation skills and demonstrated effective leadership in an environment with culturally diverse needs and abilities of staff.

Maintains clinical competency in order to understand processes and identify barriers to improve the quality of patient care.

Develops and maintains expertise in the field to address questions and provide strategic direction for quality.


WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Exposed to patient care/general hospital environment with occasional stressful conditions associated with patient care. Position requires frequent standing walking and sitting.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Shared supervisory responsibility (with ACMs and CMs) for up to 120 FTEs.
