Summary:
The Sterile Processing Department Assistant (SPA) under the general supervision of the SPD Supervisor routinely performs a variety of patient care activities within the established policies and procedures of Perioperative Services. The position requires interactions with all members of the health care team like technicians nurses physicians surgeons and other hospital staff. They must assist with the delivery/retrieval of instrumentation and other items inspection and proper care of sterile instrumentation and cleaning of equipment and storage areas stocking of supplies as directed and assigned by their direct supervisor.
Responsibilities:
Assists in ensuring continuity and quality of service by providing support to SPD/OR in cooperation with ACMs OR Leads and SPD supervisors through the proper coordination of the case cart system proper scheduling and constant communication between the two departments.
Maintains an environment conducive to safe and aseptic patient care. Informs SPD Liaison Coordinator or any SPD leader of conditions requiring action to ensure safety aseptic conditions and or infection control issues prior to completion of scheduled shift. Completes daily inspection and cleaning of equipment/area in assigned area in a timely manner.
Communicates effectively with team and customers. Interacts in a professional manner and acts as a role model for fellow employees.
Always follows policies/procedures relative to Universal Precautions.
Always wears appropriate personal protective equipment.
Participates in unit-based education and becomes a contributor.
Participates in staff development and education activities. Completes all mandatory in-service updates and web-based training on an annual basis as evidenced by attendance rosters. Attends all staff meetings. Shows initiative when learning new procedures.
Must be capable of following instructions possess good interpersonal skills and prioritize various activities assigned.
Is visibly present within the working environment and easily located as needed. Always carries communication device and readily answers calls for needs. Checks in with direct supervisor or assigned supervisor for needs.
Is aware of proper body mechanics when lifting delivering. storing of heavy objects
Anticipates and is attentive to progress of O.R. schedule has supplies ready for immediate use to meet tight deadlines of following cases.
Keeps the corridors storage and SPD department clean and free of supplies case carts racks etc.
Stores sterile instruments on their assigned spots on the shelf or storage areas.
Assist in retrieval and return of equipment/instrument from OR SPD to its original location.
Delivery of items to between SPD sites to and from OR and to and from clinical areas as designated and assigned.
Prepares case carts according to the instructions of the Liaison Coordinator or as specified by SPD leadership.
Collects logs documents from specified areas related to reprocessing and sterilization/HLD.
Keeps logs of items requested by OR whether used or not used to compile and assess efficiency of preference cards.
Ensures proper hand off products to OR Clinical areas and SPD sites making sure that all items are accounted for and confirmed.
Maintains established supply and peel pack PAR levels 100% of the time as defined by the needs of the unit by peel packing instruments needed for the Core and sterile storage areas. Communicates need for necessary supplies. Recommends changes to Par levels as needed. Cleans and restores areas as necessary. Independently checks supplies during the day for appropriate par levels and obtains needed equipment/supplies. Independently checks and restocks through- out the day.
Creates lists and restocks according to par levels the following:
Routine supplies used in SPD
Peel packs
Sterile instrument sets belonging in trauma supply areas emergency areas Pediatric areas and in the sterile processing department.
Delivers/retrieves add-on cases cancelled cases exchange carts emergency carts etc.
Perfoms basic duties of small tray assembly (clinics procedural area trays in patient unit trays etc.) and case cart prep as needed.
Carry out standard duties which are within scope (i.e. any delivery restocking cleaning shelves and storage areas organizing etc.)
Removes faulty equipment from area labels it appropriately and reports to SPD Liaison Coordinator or SPD leadership and discusses alternatives for replacement equipment/product.
Performs other duties as needed.

Physical ability to stand for long period of time to lift and carry moderately heavy surgical trays push and pull carts as well as other physical activities. Must be able to lift pull push carry 75lbs as needed and required
