SUMMARY
:

Reports to the Manager Pharmacy Operations. Responsible for coordinating and supervising operations workflow and services at the RIH site. Develops and maintains an effective work group consisting of direct report professional and supportive personnel to ensure that the Pharmacy�s medication preparation and dispensing operations throughout the RIH site are provided in accordance with established policies and procedures and applicable laws rules and regulations. Participates in continuous quality improvement activities with consideration of the aging process and human development stages (neonate child adolescent adult geriatric) to ensure that the customers' expectations are met or exceeded. Participates in the development and implementation of policies procedures and budgets for Pharmacy Services.

Responsibilities:


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

� Consistently applies the corporate values of respect honesty and fairness and the constant pursuit of excellence in improving the health status of the people of the region through the provision of customer-friendly geographically accessible and high-value services within the environment of a comprehensive integrated academic health system. Is responsible for knowing and acting in accordance with the principles of the Brown University Health Corporate Compliance Program and Code of Conduct.

� Coordinates and supervises medication preparation and dispensing operations and processes in assigned area of responsibility. Implements interprets and provides consultation for pharmacy policies procedures and standards of practice. Continually reviews and analyzes operations recommending and implementing operational changes allocation of resources new technologies etc. that will increase the efficiency and level of service of the pharmacy.

� Primarily responsible for the recruitment retention performance enhancement and competency assessment of subordinate personnel in collaboration with Pharmacy Manager and other Supervisors. Ensures compliance to established policies procedures and relevant labor contracts. Provides actionable feedback to employees to promote effective teamwork and satisfaction in the workplace in consultation with Pharmacy Manager and other Supervisors.

� Participates in determining the qualifications and competence of department personnel and in the development of tools and standards to establish and improve competency levels of the staff including orientation of new employees in-service training and continuing education programs.

� Performs all the duties of a pharmacist in preparing and dispensing medication providing drug information and other duties as required.

� Participates in the development and implementation of patient-focused pharmaceutical care services. Maintains regular contact with physicians clinical nurse managers and customers in other services/disciplines to identify opportunities for improvement and promote effective multidisciplinary collaboration.

� Participates in development of short- and long-term goals of pharmacy services in consideration of Brown University Health�s mission its values and its key business objectives. Provides input into the development of capital and operating budgets for the Pharmacy. Participates in explaining and resolving variances.

� Develops and administers staffing schedules the pharmacy; coordinates schedules of other operational areas with Pharmacy Manager and other Supervisors. Ensures that areas of responsibility are staffed according to level of service provided and patient populations served.

� Maintains computerized systems software programs and specialized equipment and technologies utilized in pharmacy services in collaboration with Pharmacy Manager and Information Services.

� Coordinates implementation and outcome documentation of ongoing pharmacoeconomic and therapeutic monitoring programs and other efforts of the pharmacy to ensure safe and effective medication use practices.

� Effectively and continually communicates with the staff management and customers to facilitate the flow of operations. Provides timely and accurate communication both written and verbal as appropriate regarding operational changes and continuous quality improvement activities including goals and objectives of the Pharmacy.

� Participates in continuous quality improvement activities and total quality management initiatives. Participates in or leads various committees task forces and performance improvement teams as assigned.

� Maintains knowledge of and expertise in leading edge developments in pharmacy therapeutics services programs and innovative technology by participation in ongoing independent study education-related professional activities and affiliations.

� Prepares papers for presentation at professional organization meetings submits manuscripts for publication in professional journals and authors articles for the Pharmacy web site.

� Interviews applicants makes recommendations for hiring and evaluates personnel

� Provides other administrator duties as assigned.

Other information:


BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

� Bachelor of Science in pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy. Advanced study in pharmacy or health-care related field preferably to a Masters or Doctor of Pharmacy degree or comparable work experience.

� Maintains current unrestricted licensure as a licensed pharmacist in the State of Rhode Island.

� Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to neonate child adolescent adult and geriatric patients with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE:

� Minimum of five years progressively more responsible related experience preferably gained in a similarly diverse and operationally complex health care environment.

� Knowledge of computerized pharmacy systems and personal computers including word processing database and spreadsheet design.

� Effective verbal and writing skills.

SUPERVISION:

� Supervisory responsibility for up to 35 FTEs.
