What are the responsibilities and job description for the Individual Behavior Specialist ( Rhode Island School for the Deaf) position at Rhode Island School for the Deaf?
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
To provide specialized support in an educational setting to deaf and hard of hearing students who
may have learning challenges in physical, cognitive, and/or social-emotional domains.
Assists other professionals with data collection, occasional student crisis intervention, and
planning for support and proactive classroom management. Works with staff school-wide on
behalf of the student to develop methods to support self-regulation and success in the classroom.
DAILY EXPECTATIONS:
• Works directly with student throughout school day to support and encourage academic and social
success
• Informs the teacher of special needs that arise and in the identification of social/ behavioral conerns with
individual students
• Participates with student data collection, documentation, and interpretation.
• Assists with the collaborative development of behavioral programming for students.
• Helps with inventory, care and maintenance of equipment
• Assists student, as needed, with personal needs that may include feeding, toileting, and
personal hygiene
• May be delegated certain health care monitoring responsibilities by the school nurse.
• Escorts and monitors student safely to and from classroom and various activities, lunch,
therapies, arrival, dismissal, etc.
• Consistently follows behavior management plan designed for individual students under the
direction of the Special Education Administrator, Teacher or Counselor
• Maintains the confidentiality of students, staff, and families. Refrains from gossip.
• Provides consistent behavioral support and aids in the inclusion and management of students
• Will be trained in Safety Care Positive Behavioral Safety approaches
