What are the responsibilities and job description for the Per Diem -Outreach Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing - RI School for the Deaf position at Rhode Island School for the Deaf?
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
•Provide instruction to deaf, hard-of-hearing, and/or language-delayed children as contracted by the school district for children in the mainstream classroom setting.
•Create, with these students, a community of learners where students feel respected and honored.
•Design curricula and activities to meet academic standards and IEP goals.
•Communicate learning goals, high standards, and expected outcomes to students.
•Engage in building positive relationships with and collaborate with the student’s team, to enhance each student’s ability to learn most effectively.
•Support the mission of the Rhode Island School for the Deaf.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the supervision of the Director of Special Education.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Generally none
FUNCTIONS and RESPONSIBILITIES:
•RISD Outreach consultants travel to public, private, charter, and parochial schools within the state of Rhode Island to provide academic support for children who are deaf and/or hard of hearing
•Create appropriate academic recommendations based on classroom and student observations.
•Present in-services to help school-based professionals understand the implication of hearing loss on accessing the curriculum.
•Provide curriculum support and modification expertise through spoken English.
•Collaborate with the IEP/504 team and participate in the IEP process as needed.
•Assess student learning by using a variety of appropriate formal and informal methods.
•Apply knowledge of best practices in curriculum, instruction, assessment, and methods for supporting and extending instruction and student learning.
•Assess student learning to inform instruction.
•Apply knowledge of School policies and City and State laws.
•Demonstrate knowledge and respect for the cultural norms and language of the Deaf community.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Rhode Island School for the Deaf is currently hiring Teachers of the Deaf (TOD) for our Outreach Program. The Outreach program is designed to meet the needs of students with hearing loss in the mainstream public school setting. Outreach TODs will provide support to students to monitor their academic progress and address their hearing needs in the mainstream classroom setting.
