RHP is a health-sciences consulting firm focusing on the fields of Exposure Science, Industrial Hygiene, Human Health Risk Assessment, Product Safety, Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), Built Environment, Risk Management, Dose Estimation & Analysis, and Exposure Simulation. Our team of 16 health-sciences professionals includes certified industrial hygienists, public health scientists, risk assessors, safety professionals, professional engineers, an economist, and administrative support staff. RHP’s headquarters office is in Chicago, IL. It has a nearby research facility (Exposure Sciences Laboratory) in Elk Grove Village, IL dedicated to performing multi-route exposure assessments (e.g., inhalation and dermal) and product safety assessments.

The Opportunity

RHP is seeking an experienced senior-level Health Sciences Regulatory Specialist to join our team who has knowledge of regulatory matters (e.g., TSCA, Prop65) and related aspects of exposure sciences, toxicology, product stewardship, product safety, and human health risk assessment. The individual would work closely with our risk assessors, industrial hygienists, and toxicologist to strategize and develop service offerings to our existing client base and perform business development activities to expand RHP’s client base by identifying and marketing to entities impacted by recently enacted or impended regulatory changes in the US and EU markets. The ideal person for this role will be detail-oriented, exhibit leadership characteristics, communicate clearly, and possess a strong aptitude for critical thinking and problem-solving. They will be a strong team player and be able to work independently when needed. The person in this role must be open to constructive feedback, an avid learner, a self-starter, curious, and service-oriented.
For this role, the individual must demonstrate a commitment to the health sciences profession through education and past work experience within agencies of interest or industry. For educational experience, we prefer graduates of Master’s or PhD level programs in a related field of health sciences, such as toxicology, epidemiology, biostatistics, chemistry, industrial hygiene, public health, environmental health, or similar.

This is a senior-level position that can be performed primarily remotely (or in-office in Chicago if desired/feasible), but if remote, would require occasional travel for an approximate once-monthly in-person presence at RHP’s Chicago area office and laboratory for project execution, staff mentoring, and office culture participation.

Schedule

Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm (40 hours per week with flexible hours and occasional weekend and after-hours based on client needs)

Core Responsibilities
  • Identify legislative changes in the US and EU markets, whether recently enacted or pending, that are expected to affect product safety and human health issues. Identify product manufacturers, exporters/importers, and distributors likely to be impacted by such regulatory changes. Perform gap analyses to clearly identify the anticipated needs of such entities driven by regulatory changes. Develop strategies to create work product, perform needed research to fill data gaps (principally exposure assessment work in our laboratory and human health risk assessment desktop modeling), and meet stakeholder needs for managing product liability, demonstrating regulatory compliance, and achieving product registration.
  • Work with exposure assessors and toxicologists at RHP to collaborate on projects where a need for a chemical exposure assessment, human health risk assessment, or exposure modeling is required to meet client needs.
  • Participate in professional societies and attend US and EU conferences to build RHP's professional image and expand your network of contacts for business development. Participate on committees and expert panels aligned with RHP’s client base, conduct internally funded research, and publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Manage technical report preparations through delegation to junior staff and providing oversight.
  • Interest in providing answers and opinions to technical issues related to the process of introducing a new chemical substance or material or evaluation of continued use of a chemical substance or material as a consulting expert and/or in support of an expert witness, often in response to actual or potential litigation, including written and oral opinions (i.e., consulting expert or expert witness work).
  • Participate on RHP’s Senior Leadership Team to help steward the firm vision.
  • Identify emerging topics of interest through the lens of science and exposure by evaluating news media and/or proposed laws and regulations that align with RHP’s areas of expertise and present potential new business opportunities or drivers.
Required Skills/Experience

This is NOT an entry-level position. The candidate must have the following experience/skills:
  • Experience working at a regulatory agency relevant to human health, occupational safety, or product safety (e.g., EPA, OSHA, CPSC, NIOSH); a government lobbyist role focused on regulatory interests relevant to human health or product safety; a regulatory compliance role within the industry, or similar.
  • Ability to identify market trends and needs, create business opportunities through client prospecting, networking, presenting, and becoming involved in stakeholder groups.
  • Excellent technical writing and speaking skills. An ability to consolidate complex technical information into key points and effectively communicate findings to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work effectively in teams with members located remotely in other states.
  • Understand and have experience with TSCA, the 2016 amendments to TSCA, California Prop 65, and similar modern ongoing issues pertaining to human health risk assessment and product safety arising out of such regulations.
  • Preferred but not required: Post-graduate degree (e.g. Master’s or PhD) in a related field of health sciences, such as toxicology, industrial hygiene, public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental sciences, biology, chemistry, physics, math, or similar.
