WIDE AREA NETWORK (WAN) SPECIALIST

DEFINITION:

Under the direction of an assigned Administrator or Supervisor, design and deploy Enterprise- wide area network and local area network infrastructure using a wide variety of networking technologies. Design and implement security and disaster recovery solutions for critical district networks WAN and LAN and wireless; provide support to District email system and District antivirus system; develop desktop deployment standards and desktop software management; develop standards and training procedures for remote site file server backups; design and customize server based solutions utilizing directory services; test and recommend network monitoring hardware and software; serve as project manager in the implementation of enterprise level services; administer file servers and applications; perform other job-related duties as assigned and/or as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Implement wide area network and local area network and wireless connectivity using routers and switches; Micro segmentation of network and servers SDWAN – Software Defined Wide Area Network SDN – Software Defined Network
  • Implement and configure network equipment to work in a wide area network environment using established District standards.
  • Develop strategies to replay, implement and manage servers, email system, backup software, and Uninterrupted Power Supply software; develop strategies for deploying, implementing and administering email Client and web-based email access.
  • Develop policies, profiles and access security EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response); anti-virus software; desktop computer access; develop staff training programs; administer servers.
  • Supervise system's database administration, including backup and restore procedures; develop, implement and monitor the system's security and applications' security to ensure data integrity in operations;
  • Prepare and maintain various files, records, logs and reports related to Local Area Networks and Wide Area Networks, Wireless Network and Wide Area Network System, file servers, proxy servers, site Web servers and assigned activities; develop and maintain project logs and record problem logs; prepare documentation concerning network changes; maintain a detailed record of various devices that access the District’s network.
  • Implements and configures network equipment to work in a wide area network environment using the District's standard.
  • Establish Internet filtering policies and ensures that the filtering system and software is updated on a scheduled basis.
  • Review network operational processes and prepare user instructions concerning log-on procedures and methods and techniques of wide area network operations.
  • Test hardware and transmission media including computer, switches, network adapters, cables and connectors using a variety of diagnostic and test equipment.
  • Plans, develop, implement, manage, backup/restore; Virtual environment, VPN-Virtual Private Networking, Physical environment, Cloud environment, WAN Circuits- Network Connectivity/Wiring, Cyber Security, Network Operating Systems, Print Procedures, Secure Backup - Enterprise backup / Data Loss Prevention / Catastrophic recovery.
  • Review, analyze and diagnose problem areas pertaining to data communication and

network procedures and servers; provide alternative problem solutions.

  • Provide technical expertise concerning a variety of operating system platforms.
  • Confer with users regarding current and prospective needs for network requirements and services.
  • Review, evaluate, recommend and implement system security configurations and server backup policies; develop procedures and perform audits of server backup procedures and documentation.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical specifications for use in the bidding and request for quotation process.
  • Operate a variety of job-related equipment including a computer and assigned software; drive a vehicle to conduct work.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned and/or as required.

  • Methods, procedures and techniques pertaining to a micro-computer, local and wide area network, hardware and software application systems.
  • Information Technology industry trends, practices, procedures and best practices.
  • Principles, methods and procedures of operating computers, networks and peripheral equipment.
  • Hardware and software applications utilized by the department and District.
  • Basic principles, methods, materials, tools and procedures involved in the installation, configuration, maintenance, repair and operation of network systems and related equipment.
  • Database structures, on-line applications and capabilities of assigned computer systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of software programs.
  • Installation and operation of computer operating system software.
  • Materials, methods and tools used in the operation and repair of computer systems.
  • Principles, theories and techniques of LAN, wireless and WAN design.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Record-keeping techniques.
  • Technical aspects infield of specialty.

ABILITY TO:

  • Effectively and efficiently participate in the operation of the District Information

Technology operation.

  • Test, analyze and interpret micro-computer hardware and software problems and determine solutions.
  • Demonstrate the connectivity of computer peripherals, printers, scanners, digital cameras and computer software.
  • Install, troubleshoot and configure switches, routers, wireless devices, DNS servers, Windows Servers and Domain Controllers.
  • Examine and diagnose equipment and software problems.
  • Install application systems and provide administration of the system(s).
  • Work with little supervision.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Demonstrate to others how to use computer hardware and software.
  • Meet schedules and timelines.
  • Maintain various records related to work performed.
  • Operate a variety of tools and equipment utilized in the maintenance and repair of computer systems.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems or a related field. Sixty (60) semester hours of college coursework and two years of experience in the implementation, operations and maintenance of Information Technology Systems can be substituted for the Bachelor’s degree.

EXPERIENCE:

Five years of paid networking experience and computer hardware and software respectively. Five years of paid experience in the installation, configuration and administration of Microsoft Servers; Five years of paid experience installing, configuring and/or administrating core and edge switches, firewalls, content filters and proxy servers. Recent job-related experience within the last five years is required.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Verification of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
