What are the responsibilities and job description for the Material Handler position at Rice Lake Weighing Syst?
For 75 years Rice Lake Weighing Systems has been a successful, growth-oriented company known as a leader in the weighing industry and our community. We are currently seeking a Full Time Material Handler to join our energetic team at our Jasper, AL facility.
BASIC FUNCTION:
At RLWS, the Material Handler is responsible for filling material orders for production processes and loading truck scales and other items on to flatbed trailer tractor units. The individual will utilize the indoor overhead crane system, forklift, or other material handling equipment to load the trucks with finished product, unload steel deliveries in the outdoor yard, and move material to work centers or storage locations. This candidate is also responsible for preparing products for the painting process, some assembly with the components of truck scales and for packing crates with scale components per customer order. This position is also responsible for entering shipping and inventory transactions on the manufacturing system with the computer. This individual will work with various power tools such as grinders, chainsaw or nail gun, and utilize other standard prepping and assembly tools. The work must be completed with a high attention to detail and high regard for safety and quality of work. Other functions as assigned.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR TASKS:
• Operate indoor overhead crane to load truck scales and other items on trucks. Ensure products are loaded safely on truck while following all safety rules of overhead crane operation
• Operate forklift and other material handling equipment in a safe manner. Ensure safe operating procedures are followed without endangering self, fellow employees or equipment
• Review daily truck/delivery schedules to determine information such as description of orders, sequence of deliveries and special loading instructions
• Direct truck drivers backing into loading bays and uncover, cover and secure loads for delivery
• Pack crates with scale components per truck scale order
• Assemble components of the truck scales in various stages
• Use various hand tools for preparing products and equipment for the painting process
• Read blueprints and other manufacturing documentation to ensure order is correct
• Inspect scales, shipping crates and other packaging materials before loading while ensuring shipped items are free from damage
• Unload delivered steel from trucks, remove packing tickets and routes as appropriate and move material to proper storage locations
• Move materials from storage locations to work centers as needed and possibly stack materials into Kanban locations
• Perform M2K computer shipping and inventory functions as necessary and ensure entries are done correctly
• Perform inventory cycle counts and report as appropriate
• Set up and maintain inventory Kanbans and ensure procedures are followed
• Keep work areas well organized and clean following 5S standards
• Work with each truck driver to troubleshoot rigging and loading styles
• Occasionally operate tools such as chainsaw or nail gun to complete shipping preparation

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Continuous standing and walking on concrete floors
• Continuous reading of manufacturing material, orders and e-mails
• Frequent climbing, bending, stooping, crouching and twisting while loading trucks, gathering parts and packing crates and mounts
• Frequent lifting and carrying of items under 35 pounds such as cover plates, mounts and bolts
• Frequent pushing and pulling of carts, cover plates, tin and rails
• Frequent 1-foot action while operating a forklift
• Frequent use of near and far vision, as well as depth, spatial and form perception; occasional use of color vision for identifying correct wires
• Frequent fine finger movements when operating the overhead crane, wiring and packing
• Frequent use of writing notes and verbal speech with co-workers and truck drivers
• Occasionally lifting and carrying items 36 - 75 pounds; team lift encouraged for items over 50 pounds
• Occasional reaching above and below the shoulder removing lugs
• Occasional kneeling and balancing while loading trucks or placing tin on mounts
• Work environment is mainly inside a manufacturing facility with frequent manufacturing noise, dust, hazardous machinery and moving objects. Occasional outside work is needed while working in the yard or loading and unloading trucks. Work is completed independently but in a group to meet strict deadlines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND PREREQUISITES:
Education and Experience
• High school diploma or equivalent
Skills and Abilities
• Strong forklift and overhead crane operation skills (on-site training provided)
• Blueprint and manufacturing documentation reading skills (preferred)
• Good verbal communication skills
• Good teamwork skills
• Some computer skills
Certificates, Licenses, Training, or Other Job-Related Requirements
• No current restrictions prohibiting regular lifting up to 50 pounds
