The Activate Engineering Communication Program at Rice University invites applications for a position at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor in Professional Communication. We seek candidates with experience integrating written, oral, and visual communication within technical writing projects, courses, and curricula. Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to pedagogical excellence and an interest in teaching-related scholarly activities.
The successful applicant will join a growing team of faculty with expertise in the practice and pedagogy of communication across multiple engineering disciplines and activities. The primary assignment for this position is to teach ENGI 501, a graduate-level workplace communication course for professional master’s students in the George R. Brown School of Engineering and Computing. The teaching load is typically 3/2.

Qualifications

- This is a full-time, benefits-eligible appointment starting July 1, 2025.
- Initial two-year appointment with the possibility of a longer renewable contract based on performance. Assistant Teaching Professors are expected to be promotable after six years at rank.
- Funding for conference travel and professional development ($2,000), with opportunities to apply for additional funding from the School of Engineering.

Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Technical Communication, Rhetoric & Composition, Applied Linguistics, or an engineering discipline
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching Engineering, Technical, or Professional Communication
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively
- Ph.D. in a relevant field - Experience teaching multilingual students
- Experience working in a university communication center and/or in industry
- Experience with communication assessment
