The Program in Writing and Communication (PWC) at Rice University in Houston, Texas, invites applications for an associate teaching professor and associate director of pedagogy. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure track faculty position with a dedicated administrative component. The successful candidate will have a record of (1) sustained excellent teaching in college writing; (2) applying recent evidence-based advances in pedagogical practices in writing; (3) professional activity that brings current knowledge of the writing and educational pedagogy into the classroom (e.g., pedagogical research, assessment, professional development, relevant creative work, curriculum development); (4) excellent service at multiple levels (department, school/college, and university); and (5) experience training faculty and/or graduate students in writing pedagogy and DEI-related topics.
Duties And Responsibilities
The position requires teaching first-year writing courses, with the teaching load equivalent of three courses per year. Ideally, one of these three courses will include serving as the instructor of record for the new first-year writing studios (overseeing the peer Studio Leaders). In the administrative role, the position will collaborate with the Director of the PWC, Director of the First-Year Writing Seminar (FWIS) program, and the rest of the PWC leadership team to support the PWC’s core values of collaboration, innovation, inclusivity, and professional growth. Specifically, the incumbent will chair the PWC’s Pedagogy Steering Committee and develop and implement pedagogical training for PWC faculty and FWIS instructors, including workshops, retreats, reading groups, and learning communities, with a focus on topics related to accessibility and inclusivity.
Teaching Professors at all ranks are expected to demonstrate a record of consistently excellent teaching, to apply and disseminate evidence-based pedagogical practices, and to carry out service to the department and university. In the context of the current position, service duties will include grading the first-year writing assessment, mentoring graduate and undergraduate student instructors, and acting as a resource for Rice faculty seeking assistance on writing/communication pedagogy, among other possibilities. Teaching Professors are neither required nor expected to carry out disciplinary research but should stay current in best teaching practices in their field and contribute to the national conversations in that field. Associate Teaching Professors are eligible to be promoted through the teaching-track ranks. Candidates with specific interests and/or demonstrated accomplishments in building diverse and inclusive teaching environments should indicate as much in their diversity statements.

Qualifications
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in their field; we also will consider applicants who have a terminal master’s degree (e.g., MFA in creative writing or MA in TESOL/applied linguistics). Degree must be conferred by June 30, 2025. Applicants also must have at least 5 years’ experience teaching undergraduate writing courses and experience training faculty and/or graduate students in writing pedagogy and DEI-related topics.
