What are the responsibilities and job description for the Language Instructor position at Rice University?
The Language Instructor at the Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies teaches English as a Second Language (ESL) for 42 weeks a year in the Glasscock School of Continuing Studies (GSCS). The schedule involves teaching English as a Second Language in the classroom four hours a day, five days a week during the 42 weeks that the Intensive English Program classes are in session. This position requires you to be flexible and available to teach in the morning or afternoon Intensive English Program. The specific teaching schedule for each session will be determined by the Director. Due to the nature of the sessions, leave time may not be taken during the weeks when classes are in session. During the 42 weeks of teaching, this position performs 20 hours of preparation weekly. The breakdown for total weekly employment during the 42 teaching weeks is designated 50% in the classroom and 50% preparation time.
Ideal candidates should have extensive skills and experience in teaching English as a Second Language to adults in an intensive English program setting. The ideal candidate is creative, has a passion for teaching international students and enjoys working in a collaborative environment.
Salary

Essential Functions
- Teaches English as a Second Language in the classroom four hours a day, five days a week during the 42 weeks that Intensive English Program classes are in session. Must be available to teach in the morning or afternoon
- Administers and scores exit examinations (up to 3-5 times per year)
- Attends scheduled teachers’ meetings and curriculum meetings (usually 4-5 meetings total per session)
- Attends Staff Development Days (usually held twice yearly)
- Participates in discussions and workshops and contribute topics, themes and presentations in conjunction with other members of the teaching staff
- Attends TEXTESOL Region IV meetings held in Houston, if they do not conflict with class hours
- Prepares and submits midterm reports and final grades
- Participates in ESL extra-curricular activities such as field trips and social events a maximum of 3-5 times per year
- Follows the curriculum that is set for the program
- Cooperative efforts and sharing between partner teachers is encouraged through curriculum meetings and building of shared files on the teachers’ network
- Performs other duties as assigned
Additional Functions / Information
- Some occasional duties listed above may replace some of the 20 weekly preparation hours but may not replace classroom teaching hours.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s Degree or equivalent in ESL or a closely related field (A degree in a closely related field must be accompanied by 12 graduate hours in ESL)
- Two years related experience teaching English as a Second Language required.
- Ability to teach all skill areas, all levels beginning through advanced.
- Native-level fluency in the English Language
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent planning and organizational skills including the ability to set individual and classroom goals and to promote program goals.
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Must use discretion and maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive data and issues.
- Excellent classroom management skills and attention to detail for recordkeeping
- Ability to use computer and AV equipment for classroom instruction required
Preferred Qualifications
Education:
- Formal study of or proficiency in another language is desirable
Skills:
- Special training such as in English for Specific Purposes is desirable
Experience:
- Experience in an intensive English Program or similarly designed ESL program for adults is preferred.
- Experience in designing and/or teaching in online programs is desirable
