Position Summary
The Research Administrator III position is situated in the Interdisciplinary Research Support Office (IRSO), a subgroup of the Office of Research dedicated to advancing Rice University’s research enterprise. IRSO achieves this by providing high-quality, outcome-driven administrative support to research institutes, centers, and interdisciplinary programs.
This role focuses on comprehensive post-award research administration, serving as a key liaison between principal investigators, central administration, and sponsors. The ideal candidate is a collaborative problem solver who excels in a dynamic research environment.
Ideal Candidate Statement
Provides deep and independent analytical and financial support in post-award administration. Acts as a liaison between the principal investigator, central administration and the funder.
Workplace Requirements
This position is offered as a hybrid role, combining both in-office and remote work to provide flexibility and support collaboration. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.
Hiring Range: minimum $72,600, with hiring salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime.

Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree
- 3 years of experience in Research Administration, at a university departmental or divisional level for large multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional programs.
- High proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite specifically Excel and database software programs
- Extensive knowledge of research administration guidelines, policies and regulations
- Excellent leadership and organizational skills and detailed oriented
- Excellent analysis, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Experience working in a higher education setting is preferred.
- Prepares, monitors, tracks, and reports on complex proposals, submission process, and status
- Serves as a liaison with OSP, RCA, OTT, internal audit, funding agencies and organizations, subcontractors, institutes, centers and other departments
- Coordinates with faculty to ensure all charges are allocated properly
- Interprets award documents and advises PI on award spending, over- / under-spending
- Establishes procedures at the unit level related to post-award administration
- Prepares, finalizes and monitors project budgets and projections in accordance with research guidelines
- Prepares, reviews and submits required reports, including progress and routine financial reports
- Coordinates and reviews account setup, account close out activities, and close out analysis
- Reviews, tracks, monitors and approves expenditures, including high-value / high-risk expenditures and cost-sharing commitments
- Identifies the need for and requests no-cost extensions
- Responds to Accounting audit inquiries
- Monitors and oversees compliance in general and related to funds and revenue
- Manages effort commitments of key project personnel
- Manages and supervises staff workflow, professional development including post award activities
- Performs all other duties as assigned
