SUMMARY: The role of the Health Assistant is to assist the Corporation Nurse in the implementation of a safe and healthy school environment in an assigned school.
EDUCATION/LICENSE/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Diploma
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties as assigned.
- Conduct and perform examinations and screening activities under the guidance of the Corporation School Nurse as required by law.
- Observe and follow the guidelines established in the handbook “RBBCSC Health Services”.
- Coordinate procedures for the prevention and control of communicable diseases in the school corporation.
- Assist with the implementation of a safe and healthy school environment in the schools.
- Serve as liaison between the student, family, and community as required.
- Serve as a consultant to the administrators and school personnel, parents, and children in regard to health needs of pupils in the school.
- Maintain all health records and update cumulative record folders as required.
- Identify children with specific health problems and suggest solutions to those problems as required and distribute a written list to all faculty.
- Conduct a scalp inspection on a regular basis of students who may be infectious to the rest of the student body and work with the parents and students.
- Acquaint school health personnel with community health problems and strive for the prevention of disease in an environment safe for student and school personnel.
- Be available and provide health counseling in education for students, personnel, and community as needed.
- Maintain a positive relationship with other staff, parents, and students.
- Provide emergency care for illness or injury occurring during school hours according to established school policy.
- As requested by the building administrator, the health assistant may make home visits as required for communicable disease control and health purposes.
- Assist and evaluate students to determine if they are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Must be able to speak on demand to large groups of people. Must be able to transport between school buildings, districts and cities. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in a specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
