JOB SUMMARY
This position performs skilled work in the operation of a variety of light to heavy automotive, construction, farm equipment, and commercial mowers for Richland County Recreation Commission (RCRC) facilities. Work involves operating a large and complex, heavy industrial motor equipment in the performance of assigned complex construction and maintenance activities. Performs safety inspection prior to operating equipment and monitors gauges and other equipment while in operation. Performs routine maintenance and may assist with repairs. This position also performs manual labor when not operating equipment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Operates a wide variety of heavy equipment to accomplish assigned construction and maintenance tasks.
- Loads and hauls heavy equipment and machinery on low-boy truck and trailer or other appropriate truck and trailer combinations to transport equipment.
- Performs the full range of operations with equipment such as bulldozer, front-end loader, tractor-trailer, backhoe, motor grader, and other types of heavy equipment.
- Drives trucks and delivers equipment/supplies to locations.
- Operates other equipment such as light and heavy dump truck and light tractor.
- Driving to and from different locations within the Agency.
- Conducts safety inspection, perform routine maintenance, and assists with repairs to equipment as needed.
- Follow verbal and written assignment instructions.
- Performs manual work when not operating equipment.
- Inspects equipment and/or vehicles being used and makes minor repairs or adjustments as needed.
- Assists with mowing grass and removing trees, brushes, and other vegetation when needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or GED.
- Two (2) years of related work experience with experience in the safe operation of tractors, stake body trucks with trailers, dump trucks with trailers, and heavy construction equipment and some experience in construction, building, and grounds maintenance.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of standard practices and procedures for maintenance and repair of heavy trucks and equipment.
- Knowledge of operation and repair of diesel engines.
- Knowledge of safe driving and traffic rules and practices.
- Knowledge of sports field construction, maintenance, and upkeep.
- Knowledge of job hazards and appropriate safety precautions and equipment to maintain a safe work environment.
- Knowledge of the operation and preventive maintenance of various types of trucks and heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of ball field constructions, maintenance, and upkeep procedures.
- Skill in the operation of heavy equipment.
- Ability to follow oral and written directions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to work as a team member.
- Ability to operate light and heavy trucks and other equipment in a safe manner, and in accordance with traffic laws and ordinances.
- Ability to diagnose and repair a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to meet RCRC standards for assigned functions.
CERTIFICATION, LICENSE, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess a valid South Carolina CDL class A Driver’s License, a driving record suitable for insurability.to drive an RCRC vehicle, and produce an acceptable 10-year driving record.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is medium to heavy work and requires exerting up to 70 pounds of force occasionally, up to 40 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work may also require balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, distinguishing among sounds, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity in data/color/observations/equipment, and walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is typically performed in a safe and secure work environment that may periodically have unpredicted requirements or demands. Requires working weekends and being able to withstand exposure to various climatic conditions.
