What are the responsibilities and job description for the Online Course Mentor - High School (2nd Semester) position at Richmond Community School District?

Summary:
The Online Course Mentor provides support and guidance to students enrolled in district-supported online courses during the regular school year. Mentors ensure student engagement and progress by documenting attendance, monitoring academic progress, and facilitating required two-way communication in PowerSchool. While mentors are not responsible for lesson planning, instruction, or grading, they play a crucial role in assisting students with navigating their online coursework. Assignments are scheduled during the teacher’s preparation period, with a preference for mentors who have expertise in the course content.
Expectations:
- Teacher will make a minimum of one two-way communication each week (Wednesday to Tuesday) with student(s) enrolled in a virtual class. Communication is preferably completed in-person but can also occur through electronical (email) communication. Conversation should be academic in nature and is logged using the two-way communication tab in PowerSchool. Training/overview of this communication tab will be provided.
- Teacher will update grade in PowerSchool according to the Michigan Virtual gradebook a minimum of once per week.
- Teacher will communication with parents/guardians about poor grades in accordance with the handbook.
Mentor-Mentee (online student) assignments will be made by the HS Principal and the Director of Human Resources. Individuals notified to be a mentor teacher to online students are required to meet with the HS Principal to review expectations and documentation requirements.
REA Contract, Article VI (Teaching COnditions), Section R:
The Board may offer online classes, as allowed by pupil accounting rules and regulations, at the middle and high school during the regular school hours in compliance with state regulations. All students taking online courses, supported by the District, during the school year shall be assigned a mentor. Teachers shall only be assigned as an online mentor to students taking online courses at the same time as the preparation hour of the teacher and can mentor a student in any course. To the extent possible, the onsite mentor shall be a content area teacher in the content of the online course. Mentors shall be paid $125.00 per student, per semester. The mentor teacher will not be expected to create lesson plans, teach lessons, or evaluate student progress.
