- School-Based 10 month and 12 month Custodian***
Education: Eighth grade education. High school diploma or GED preferred.
Certification or Licensure: None required
Skills: Knowledge of the methods, materials, and practices of building and grounds work; ability to
operate and maintain custodial and grounds care equipment; including auto scrubbers, and burnish
machine, uses personal protective equipment and other safety tools and practices; monitors building
spaces and grounds to ensure a safe and secure environment; possesses a basic knowledge of emergency
response procedures. Must be consistently professional and ethical, and respect the values of
confidentiality and integrity. Is also willing to take and follow directions. Good organizational skills,
delegation skills, and motivational skills. Works cooperatively with others, and has the ability to establish
and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public. Must possess
knowledge of occupational safety and health regulations. Must have a solid knowledge of the utilization
and care of materials and equipment used in the performance of his/her responsibilities.
Work Experience: Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide
the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
Primary Duty
This position is responsible for performing manual tasks concerned with general housekeeping, sanitation,
and appearance of the school plant. Under general supervision, performs building cleaning and facilities
maintenance work in schools and administrative buildings. The work involves varied building cleaning
duties and related facilities and grounds maintenance work.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Has a positive attitude toward job and customer service. Dresses appropriately for a school setting
- Cleans and maintains a variety of other surfaces such as ceilings, chalkboards, counter and table
- Comply with all regulatory mandates.
- Work independently, organize, and use time effectively. Can work effectively with frequent
- Assists school staff by making deliveries to classrooms, moving furniture and other heavy objects
- Responsible for the overall condition of the building and grounds.
- Safely work with cleaning chemicals and refuse in compliance with all required regulations
- Order and maintain building supplies and maintenance of supply budget.
- Operates power mower in cutting lawns and cleans up rubbish from grounds and adjacent areas.
- Operates all cleaning equipment to include basic tools for maintenance such as ladders, tools, etc.
- Dusts, sweeps, mops, vacuums, scrubs, buffs, and cleans floors, carpets, hallways classrooms,
- Cleans and washes walls, light fixtures, blinds, windows, restrooms, clinic, water fountains, and

Work Environment / Physical Demands
The work environment characteristics are representative of those an employee encounters while

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. While performing the duties
of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently
required to walk, stand, and sit.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Occasional overtime or night work required. Sufficient physical
strength and ability to lift and move heavy objects (minimum 50 lbs.) and to perform manual
labor. The nature of work is repetitive and could require sustained physical effort and involves
some heavy work in moving or lifting furniture and equipment with some exposure to accident
and injury hazards and disagreeable elements.
Employees who possess the appropriate certificate may be assigned responsibility for checking
or operating heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning equipment. Employees in these classes are
considered.
