What are the responsibilities and job description for the Risk Management Intern, Summer 2025 position at Richmond National?
Job title: Risk Management Intern
Location: On-site at Glen Allen, VA office
Duration: 10-week paid summer internship
Company Overview
Richmond National is a specialty property & casualty insurance company focused on providing insurance to small and mid-size businesses that are unable to find coverage in the standard insurance market.
We operate exclusively within the excess & surplus lines market, which provides our underwriters flexibility to develop highly tailored policies to best meet the insurance needs and risk management objectives of our customers.
Job Description
Reporting directly to the Chief Risk Officer, the Risk Management Intern will bring energy and creative insights to the company’s risk management function. As a relatively young company, Richmond National Insurance continues to build out its risk management framework, policies, and procedures. Accordingly, the risk management intern will have the opportunity to participate in and contribute to that process from the ground up. To deeply engage with the risk management role, the intern will begin the summer with the risk management team and then, at the direction of the Chief Risk Officer, be immersed in a rotational program within various functions whose core purposes are to manage risk.
Departments in the rotation will include finance and may also include legal and regulatory, claims, actuarial, and information technology functions. At each stop in the rotation, the intern will be assigned duties central to the function’s risk management activities. For example, with finance the intern will analyze the company’s credit risk, facilitate the company’s annual fraud risk assessment, and analyze controls designed to prevent, or detect and correct, misstatements in the financial statements.
Following each rotation, the intern will return to the risk management team to memorialize the experience by reviewing and refreshing the design and related documentation of the company’s risk management framework. A successful person in this role will be proactive, attentive to details, extremely organized, and will communicate effectively while successfully demonstrating the ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
