The Richmond SPCA is one of our region's most beloved non-profit organizations. As a national no-kill leader in animal welfare, the Richmond SPCA is building a more compassionate community through the delivery of crucial programs of pet adoption, retention, training, advocacy, humane education, and more. Annually, we rescue, rehabilitate, and adopt out nearly 4,000 homeless animals while also providing our community with vital safety net programs designed to keep pets in loving homes and out of shelters.
The Assistant Manager of Volunteers will help recruit, train, and maintain a team of dedicated volunteers, and to support the Richmond SPCA's lifesaving mission through creative use of our volunteers' time and talents.
Essential Functions
- Provide prompt and polite assistance to prospective and active volunteers via phone, email, and in person.
- Scheduling of volunteer training schedules and preparing training materials
- Work closely with the Manager of Volunteers to help execute department goals and strategies, especially the support of other departments through volunteer assistance.
- Train volunteers in Richmond SPCA policies regarding general volunteer work and animal handling.
- Routinely audit the log of volunteer security cards.
- Assist in coordinating our volunteer pet enrichment & training teams.
- Assist with recruiting and supervising volunteers for special events including, but not limited to, the Fur Ball, Dog Jog, 5K and Block Party, Fidos After 5, Paws for Paramedics, offsite adoption events, community informational tables, as well as other events as needed.
- Supervise individuals and group volunteers.
- Provide IT support for volunteer software.
- Assist with planning, setting up, and hosting annual volunteer appreciation events.
- Ensure that volunteers consistently feel valued for their work and that they recognize the importance of the assistance they provide.
- Oversee volunteer department support staff and assist with hiring for vacant positions.
- Run reports and analyze department data.
- Other related duties as assigned

Work Environment
- Rapid pace with limited exposure to potential hazards including animal waste and disinfectants
- High levels of noise at times
- Potential for animal bites and scratches and zoonotic disease (transmitted from animals to people)
- Work in a team environment with other passionate, hardworking and dedicated animal lovers, making a difference in their lives every day
Physical Job Requirements
- Able to work around animals (including those who are sick or injured or who have behavior challenges), loud noises, cat litter, animal waste, and various chemicals
- Able to be on your feet for extended periods of time.
- Able to routinely lift 40-50 lbs.
- Able to push/pull a large cart

Salary : $39,500 - $44,000
