Position Responsibilities
Summary:
To plan, organize and implement an instructional program in Grades 5-7 Mathematics and Grade 8 Algebra I in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic and personal potential.
The Math Specialist also works with colleagues, especially the class teacher, to support continuity of the program and with parents to establish clear communication and student support. This job is for the 2025/2026 school year.
Essential Functions:
- Researches the math curriculum and methodologies for the grade level being taught
- Creates the year’s curricular scope and sequence in collaboration with the class teacher
- Creates weekly lesson plan for skills classes, Grade 5-8 as well as the weekly lesson plans for on-going classes
- Prepares and presents lessons that are inspired by and expressive of Waldorf pedagogy
- Engages students in appropriate lessons and activities
- Nurtures the class community of students
- Maintains positive relationships with parents and responds to all parent concerns
- Maintains positive, professional relationships with colleagues and responds to all collegial concerns
- Collaborates with the class teacher to support their work with the class
- Schedules parent conferences, as necessary
- Participates in at least one parent evening per year
- Works with colleagues in faculty and section meetings
- Works with parents and volunteers in committee meetings, task forces, and on projects
- Assesses students, both informally and formally, on a regular basis.
- Submits rubrics at parent-teacher conferences for Grade 6-8
- Submits quarterly and semester reports/ grades (grades 6 (after midyear), 7, & 8)
- Submits end-of-year reports in arithmetic and math
- Writes student recommendations as needed
- Works with an advisor at least weekly for teachers in their first 3 years of teaching.
- Engages in on-going professional and personal growth
- Attends and participates in Open Houses, Holiday Faire, Fundraising Auction, May Faire, all-school work days, and all-school festivals and other all-school events
- Prepares substitute plans for all scheduled math lessons
- Is available to substitute for Main lesson at least once a week
- Is available to offer morning exercise, circle or morning math exercises in Grades 5-8
- Works with individuals or small groups of students on a remedial basis in Grades 3-8 on a weekly basis.
- Advises class teachers, grades 1-4, in methods to enhance numeracy.
Work Environment:
This job operates in a professional environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and scanners.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:
- The academic year is July 1 , 2025 - June 30, 2026
- The school work calendar includes two weeks before and one week after the close of the academic year, and additional times as the school deems necessary.
- Employee's work extends beyond the scheduled school days to include open houses, work days, festivals, and community events
- Employee will arrive at school by 7:45 a.m. and may leave after 3:15 on days when there are no meetings.
- Employee will teach a full time schedule. This consists of 19 scheduled 40-minute classes/meetings, and XX scheduled 40-minute planning periods.
- teaching 3 periods/week in Grades 5, 6, 7 each
- four periods a week in Grade 8,
- tutoring 5 periods/week,
- meeting with an advisor one period/week
- Meeting with class teachers, Grades 1-4, to discuss numeracy
- Availability during the time period, 8:15 - 10:15 for main lesson coverage and/or morning exercises
- Regular full time recess duties.
