Job Title: Lifeguard/ Aquatics Instructor
Location: Hunterdon County, NJ
Reports To: Aquatics Specialist, and Programs Coordinator
Position Purpose: Aquatics Instructors further the mission of YMCA Camp Bernie by providing supervision and ensuring a safe environment at the camp’s pool and waterfront activities. They assist in the management to the physical operation of the waterfront facilities and equipment.
Essential Job Functions:
1: Supervise and guard all pool and waterfront activities.
a. Provide surveillance during aquatic activities to help prevent and to manage injuries.
b. Perform rescues as needed.
c. Utilize first aid and CPR and other emergency management services as needed.
2: Ensure that campers and staff know and follow safety and educational procedures in boating.
a. Understand and implement appropriate responses to changes in water conditions or weather conditions affecting the activity areas.
b. Evaluate aquatic abilities of campers.
c. Ensure campers and staff members follow all safety protocols.
d. Be prepared to enact written emergency procedures in the event of accident or illness.
3: Lead instruction in swimming and boating activities.
a. Deliver fun and creative swim and boating program activities.
b. Work with the Aquatics Director to develop lesson plans that meet camp outcomes and match the ability level of campers.
c. Evaluate the success of the camp programs, in partnership with the Aquatics Director, to ensure the development of camper abilities and skills.
4: Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in the pool and waterfront program areas.
a. Conduct a daily check of the area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
b. Clean waterfront area daily, keeping it free of hazards and debris.
5: Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in order to meet the intended camper outcomes.
a. Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth.
b. Assure campers are supervised and properly cared for at all times.
c. Be aware of and implement safety guidelines.
6. Assist in the direction and supervision of campers with the living unit, and throughout camp, in order to meet the intended camper outcomes.
a. Reside in cabins with assigned cabin group to ensure compliance with camp rules and prevent accidents.
b. Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship building, respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth.
c. Assure campers are properly supervised at all times.
d. Be aware of and implement safety guidelines at all times.
Other Job Duties:
a. Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communications as requested by Aquatics Director, Program Coordinator, and/or Summer Camp Coordinators.
b. Participate enthusiastically in camp activities and be an engaged member of the Camp community.
c. Participate as a member of the staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all camp activities and camp functions.
d. Any and all other added responsibilities as requested by Aquatics Director, Program Coordinator and Leadership Staff.
Qualifications:
a. Must be at least 18 years of age.
b. Must carry current lifeguarding certification, and provide proof of such.
c. Certification in WSI or YMCA Swim Instruction preferred.
d. Must submit health history record and examination form prior to first day of work.
e. Must have the ability to lead activities, be a group leader, and be flexible.
Compensation:
a. Hourly rate of $15.50.
Plus $0.50 per hour for each past summer of employment (up to three past summers).
Physical Aspects of the Job:
a. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
b. Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in the event of an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
