Job Title: Medical Technician - Histopathology Technician

Location: Augusta, ME – VA Togus Maine Healthcare

Job Overview:
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Medical Technician - Histopathology Technician to join our team at VA Togus Maine Healthcare. Histopathology Technician is a specialized laboratory professional who assists in the preparation and examination of tissue samples for disease diagnosis, including cancer and infections. They work in hospitals, pathology laboratories, research centers, and forensic labs.
Key Responsibilities:
Responsible for grossing tissue specimens, accessioning them into the computer system, embedding, sutting, staining, and cover-slipping tissue
Prepare special stains for tissue as requested by pathologists
Assist pathologists in cutting surgical, frozen sections, and possibly autopsies
May serve as a back-up morgue assistant in the absence of the contract diener
Requirements:
Experience:
Minimum 3 years of recent Histology and Cytology experience
Training & Certifications:
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) / Basic Life Support (BLS) (renewable every two years, 4 hours)
VA Privacy and Information Security Awareness (1 hour annually)
VHA Privacy and HIPAA Focused Training (1 hour annually)
Vaccinations:
Proof of negative Tuberculosis Skin Test (TST) or interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA)
Proof of immunization for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, and Pertussis
Annual Influenza vaccine
Full COVID-19 vaccination (exemptions reviewed on a case-by-case basis)
Other Requirements:
Must be technically proficient, fluent in English, and meet all VA educational and mandatory training courses
