About the Role
As a Construction Estimator, you will be responsible for preparing detailed and accurate cost estimates for commercial construction projects. You will analyze project drawings, site conditions, and specifications to determine costs, evaluate subcontractor proposals, and contribute to the overall project planning process. This role requires strong analytical skills, industry expertise, and the ability to manage multiple bids simultaneously.
Key Responsibilities
Project Estimation & Bid Preparation:
- Review and analyze construction project plans, drawings, specifications, and requirements.
- Conduct site visits to assess access, services, surface topography, and drainage conditions.
- Perform quantity surveys (take-offs) to determine material and labor needs.
- Generate and submit RFIs to clarify bid documents and requirements.
- Prepare and submit accurate and competitive bids in a timely manner.
- Maintain current documentation and estimation data according to company standards.
Subcontractor & Vendor Management:
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with subcontractors and suppliers.
- Pre-qualify and solicit bids from a list of competent subcontractors.
- Analyze and evaluate subcontractor proposals, mitigating risk and ensuring competitive pricing.
- Distribute blueprints, drawings, and project specifications to subcontractors.
Post-Project Award Responsibilities:
- Select and negotiate contracts with winning subcontractors.
- Oversee job buyout and ensure smooth transition from estimation to execution.
- Assist the project team with forecast reporting and budget analysis.
- Support the project management team in coordinating with subcontractors and vendors.
- Maintain historical cost data to improve the accuracy of future estimates.
Continuous Improvement & Collaboration:
- Identify and avoid potential estimating errors, while recognizing improvement opportunities.
- Participate in business development meetings and client presentations.
- Provide recommendations for improving internal estimation and project delivery processes.
- Stay up to date on industry trends, construction materials, and pricing fluctuations.
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- 2 years of experience in commercial and/or retail construction estimating.
- Prior experience with a general contractor is strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of construction principles, methods, and materials.
Skills & Technical Expertise:
- Ability to interpret all levels of construction drawings (conceptual through construction phase).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Experience with PrimeBid, Timberline, or other construction estimation software.
- Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Highly detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.

- Must be cooperative and team-oriented, working effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to travel for pre-job meetings, site visits, and client interactions.
