The Career Counselor will provide career counseling, assessment, advising and guidance to students and graduates on a variety of career-related issues including career preparation, career decision making, internship and job searching, and portfolio, resume and interview preparation.
As part of the Center for Career Services team, the Career Counselor will participate in activities that include workshops, recruiting events, liaison work with academic departments and committees, and program planning that supports the goals and mission of Ringling College's comprehensive Center for Career Services. The Career Counselor will also provide information on portfolio reviews, resume and cover letter writing, interview skills, job / internship search strategy domestically and internationally, and graduate school applications. They will participate in professional associations to ensure implementation of current practices and currency with industry standards, including visa requirements and processes for students.
Job Description
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
1.Provide career counseling through individual appointments, group sessions, class presentations, training workshops, etc.
2.Perform resume critiques, portfolio reviews, and cover letter critiques as needed.
3.Use personality assessments, such as the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, as needed.
4.Assist other professionals in the Center for Career Services by participating in or presenting career-related workshops for students and alumni.
5.Collaborate with the Director of International Affairs in developing information for our international student population related to visa issues and hiring.
6.Oversees and coordinates the CCS Student Advisory Committee and actively involve the members with the CCS and share their insights.
7.Collaborate with faculty to provide career-related classroom visits.
8.Assist with developing appropriate usage of the Center's online and print resources.
9.Occasionally attend career-related and art-related conferences to stay abreast of industry trends and represent Ringling College of Art and Design.
10.Work with academic departments to provide in-class trainings or create additional career-related workshops.
11.Interact with members of the Student Life team, for consultation or referrals, e.g. the Peterson Counseling Center.
12.Partner with the Office of Registration and Advising staff to ensure accurate academic data as it refers to career counseling, internship records, and the career services management software.
13.Assists with statistical data gathering for input in the annual report.
14.Provide insights on budgetary needs pertaining to counseling tools, technology and professional development.
15.Other duties as assigned by Director.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :
1.Knowledge of career counseling principles, theory and practices.
2.Highly computer proficient; enter data into and maintain databases, ability to utilize the career services management software, Google Drive, and advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and LinkedIn.
3.Demonstrated ability to use career assessment instruments and computerized career guidance systems such as the Myers Briggs Type Indicator; certification preferred.
4.Possess excellent written and verbal communications skills.
5.Possess a high level of interpersonal and human relations skills.
6.Possess excellent organizational and time management skills.
7.Ability to interact appropriately with a wide variety of personality types and professionals.
8.Demonstrate in-depth and ongoing sensitivity towards diversity, which includes but is not limited to BIPOC, neurodivergence, disability, and the LGBTQIA community.
9.Ability to create and execute professional presentations.
10.Knowledge and intervention skills within career counseling contexts for undergraduate and alumni populations.
11.Ability to complete job duties, projects, and assignments without supervision.
12.Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and use of good judgment.
13.Knowledge and adherence of FERPA guidelines and requirements.
14.Ability to work on PC and MAC platforms.
Education and Experience
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :
Minimum :
- Bachelor's degree in counselor education, college student affairs, psychology, higher education or related field.
- Two years of experience; equivalent experience gained through graduate level courses will be considered.
