POSITION SUMMARY :
Works closely with gallery administrators, curators, artists, students, and other college staff to produce high-quality exhibitions. Assists in the preparation, security, installation and de-installation of gallery exhibitions and other display materials. Key responsibilities include coordination of art handling and display, packing, crating, transporting, lighting and maintenance of exhibitions, galleries, art storage areas, and preparatory spaces.
Job Description
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
1.Working under the direction of the Director and Chief Curator, and other gallery administrators, the preparator adheres to and helps to enforce the College's fine art handling policies and procedures as directed by the supervisor including the installation, movement, packing and storage of fine art.
2.Assists in the installation, and de-installation of art exhibitions and other materials for public display and installing works of art around campus in offices, hallways, lobbies and other public areas. Assists in receipt, dispersal, packing, crating, transportation, handling, lighting and maintenance of exhibitions. Implements proper storage and display methods. Works with other temporary art handling personnel in performing related work.
3.Confers with exhibition curators, artists and staff for the design and construction of exhibits; participates in exhibition installation teams.
4.Consults with Director and Chief Curator with regard to art movement, handling, lighting, installation and storage.
5.Participates in the ongoing monitoring of the condition and appearance of exhibit installation, lighting and artwork. Assists with inspecting the condition of ingoing and outgoing artworks.
6.Organizes gallery equipment, tools and supplies; insures adherence to safe workplace practices and procedures in the handling of art and in all preparation work spaces.
7.Operates rental vehicles as needed for art transport and procurement of tools and supplies.
8.Performs other duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :
1.Ability to work simultaneously on a variety of projects in a fastpaced environment with great attention to detail.
2.Knowledge of fine art handling procedures for two-and three-dimensional art objects in a variety of materials, sizes, and weights, including the rigging and movement of art; mount making principles, and lighting concepts.
3.Ability to install and operate digital works of art including video, films and audio recordings being projected, displayed on flat screen monitors laptops, and iPads.
4.Knowledge of fine art handling training practices and procedures. Ability to explain and carry out methods and procedures relating to the handling of irreplaceable objects of fine art.
5.Knowledge of safe fine art storage, packing, crating, lighting and transport techniques and procedures.
6.Ability to perform basic mathematic calculations with accuracy and precision while hanging works of fine art.
7.Excellent communication skills (oral and written) and excellent interpersonal skills.
8.Basic computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, email, Internet, as well as software displaying digital, video and audio works of art.
9.Knowledge of the design and construction of museum exhibitions.
10.Knowledge and experience in using standard tools, practices and methods in painting and basic carpentry. Skill in the safe use and care of standard hand and power tools.
11.Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures.
12.Strong time management and organizational skills. Ability to meet deadlines efficiently.
13.Ability to interpret working drawings and implement design concepts.
Education and Experience
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :
Minimum Qualifications :
- A high school diploma or GED.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Florida driver's license.
