Job Purpose
Demonstrates competency to teach and lead specific skills and activities in the water for group and private lessons.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Come prepared to instruct in a safe conscious manner following the program philosophy
- Be in the water with each group class/private lesson at all levels. Provide instruction in requested/required stroke or skills for the lesson
- Conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times while at work, whether in the pool or in the lifeguard office.
- Wear an approved swimsuit to all lessons and wear the approved instructor shirt. An approved swimsuit is a one piece suit that is in respectable condition
- Track the students’ goals and progression through the use of ARC skills sheets for group lessons
- Assess the needs of the patrons and communicate concerns to the Aquatics Director
- Observe and enforce all rules and regulations
- Help to maintain the organization of the Learn To Swim toys and the Learn To Swim area
- For group lessons complete the attendance records, and skill sheets by the last day of class
- Prevent accidents and minimize or eliminate hazardous situation. Respond quickly to emergency situations/administer First Aid if necessary
- Have a thorough knowledge of the rules and procedures of the facility
- Any other duties as assigned

Qualifications
- Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Individuals must be able to attend any training sessions held by the department
- Individuals must or be willing to obtain a current certification in CPR/AED For the Professional Rescuer, Standard First Aid, and Water Safety Instructor (WSI) all through the American Red Cross
- Swim Instructors should display a positive customer service attitude, and be a team player
- Available to substitute as necessary
- Understand and act out Emergency Action Plan (EAP) as needed
- Standard First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, and Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
- Must have a thorough understanding of swimming lessons techniques for both youth and adult.
- Under the direction of the Aquatics Director the Learn To Swim Instructor will teach swimming and safety skills to patrons, complete appropriate paperwork including but not limited to Red Cross Course Records and lesson attendance records, and attend all Learn To Swim In-Services
- Must have the ability and discretion to handle conflict among employees, as well as participants, and to determine the appropriate course of action
Working Conditions
Work responsibilities will be performed in and around a pool within a recreational facility. Some work may be done in a standard office environment within the facility. Work may be performed both indoors and outdoors.
