JOB SUMMARY:
The Regenerative Programs Manager advises, consults and collaborates with the Director of the Nature Lab to develop, design and implement new models and methods for delivering, facilitating and coordinating learning opportunities and on-campus projects that encourage sustainable, regenerative outcomes. Responsible for leveraging Nature Lab’s mission, capacity and resources to address the priorities and interests of academic departments and other on-campus partners in facilitating regenerative outcomes for the campus community. Provides creative input on the development of exhibits, publications and education programs. Working independently and as a facilitator, collaborator and convener, advances new applications of current and emerging best practices in regenerative design and sustainable campus practices, particularly in areas related to ecosystem services and emerging areas of ethical, regenerative bio-informed art and design. This position is critical to RISD meeting the Strategic Plan pillar of sustainable, ethical making practices, and has the potential to distinguish RISD as a leader among art|design colleges in commitment to a regenerative ethos that permeates the campus.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIES:
- With an in-depth understanding of scientifically driven sustainability methodologies, investigate contemporary and emerging practices in the biological sciences, sustainability, and regenerative practices and their relationship to the fields of art and design. Collaborate with faculty to understand their curricular needs and propose new models and methods for curriculum support and content development. Teach and support the use of Nature Lab science resources through workshops, demonstrations, and or one-on-one mentorship/instruction.
- With a high level of ecological and/or regenerative practice expertise, design, propose and refine new workshops, exhibits, and programs, in keeping with the Nature Lab’s mission and core content areas. Collaborate with faculty in support of existing courses and curricula and partner in the development of new content areas. Facilitate engagement with potential collaborators both on and off campus.
- Supervise, evaluate and mentor undergraduate and graduate student employees assigned to their area of work. Develop and supervise student research projects and provide support, direction and recognition for student workers.
- Undertake original research projects that showcase new opportunities for integrating biological sciences and ecological literacy in art and design education. Identify external funding sources and work with the Director on grant and foundation proposals, including identifying methodologies as well as budget determination and justification. Document and disseminate project outcomes.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
- Support fundraising and public relations efforts of the Nature Lab by hosting guests and visitors and participating in institution-wide and departmental projects and events. Work closely with the Director, Public Safety, Foundation Studies staff and Environmental Health and Safety to support a safe and secure working environment.
- Assist the Director with other projects, programs and functions of the Nature Lab, in support of its mission, as directed. Complete other related duties as assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS/SPECIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Master’s degree in biology, environmental science, sustainability or biodesign focused art|design discipline required or an equivalent combination of specialized academic education and programming experience.
- Minimum four years of experience in a biological, biodesign, sustainability programming or natural science setting and the demonstrated ability and professional experience to comprehend the connections between, and to advocate for, the study of regenerative pathways for transdisciplinary art|design|science projects in a natural science setting.
- Must also demonstrate a high level of ecological literacy.
- Computer experience required for maintaining records, schedules and data entry, as well as basic understanding of GIS mapping systems.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively and flexibly in a service-oriented environment.
- Must be able to give attention to detail as well as foster an inspirational learning environment. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
PREFERRED:
- Demonstrated teaching experience in either formal or informal learning settings preferred.
- Experience supervising students or other personnel in an educational setting preferred.
