RiseWell Community Services is seeking a Peer Counselor at the Community Residence in Glen Cove. The hours are part-time flexible.
REPORTS TO: Program Supervisor
DEPARTMENT: Residential Services
QUALIFICATIONS:
Personal or shared experience with mental illness and/or substance abuse issues. Ability and desire to assist others in mastery of independent living skills and the personal recovery process . Understanding of peer support, self-help philosophy. Clean, valid NY State Driver’s License. Fingerprinting, criminal record check, approval from NY State Office of Mental Health.
JOB FUNCTION:
To provide a positive role model of community functioning, informal counseling, peer support and ADL training in a licensed residential program providing transitional housing to people with psychiatric disabilities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
A. Provide role model of positive functioning in the community by sharing experiences, strengths and hopes; support residents in taking steps for their personal recovery on a daily basis.
B. Assist staff in helping residents improve their interpersonal skills, personal hygiene skills and ADL tasks daily.
C. Identify and link residents to community resources (banking, shopping, social events, entitlements, etc.) each week.
D. Provide support and assistance to residents in menu planning, cooking, and housekeeping daily.
E. Provide informal peer counseling to assist in increasing residents’ motivation to develop and attain concrete goals, both within the residence and in the community monthly.
F. Assist household as a group in developing an effective peer-support self-help community monthly.
G. Comply with agency Compliance Plan and False Claims Policy by preventing, detecting and reporting any potential healthcare abuse and fraud. Report any potential non-compliance and comply with all other federal, state and local regulations applicable to this job description.
H. Utilize all agency-based IT applications in a proficient manner including collaborative documentation, review of emails at least twice per shift (at start and prior to close of the shift), as well as utilizing Outlook Calendar on a daily basis.
I. Remain current on changing developments in individual field of expertise and licensing credentials.
J. Perform all other job duties as assigned.
