RIVA (Refugee and Immigrant Voices in Action) leverages the power of community

by training emerging leaders from refugee and immigrant communities to become

work-readiness trainers. RIVA leaders connect and support fellow refugees with

education, jobs and services to increase economic opportunities for refugees and

economic growth to Iowa.

ABOUT THE ROLE

RIVA AmeriCorps Program is searching for service-minded individuals to serve

diverse refugee and immigrant communities in Iowa. You will work with community

agencies to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate education, referrals,

outreach, and direct services to refugee and immigrant families in need.

Looking for candidates that have a(n):

  • Interest in and respect for different cultures with a commitment to social

justice

  • Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to communicate in a language of

one of Iowa’s refugee communities is a plus, but not required

  • Ability and willingness to serve flexible hours, including occasional evenings

and weekends

  • Ability to use or learn to use a computer for e-mail communication, online

reporting (monthly time reports, quarterly impact data), and preparing

monthly success stories/reflections

  • Experience training or teaching adults, preferably across racial, cultural,

class, and gender differences is a plus

TERM LENGTH / POSITION TYPE

  • Part-time $11,500 a year PLUS $3,697.5 Education Award
  • Term Length 28 weeks

Start 03/31/2025

SERVICE SCHEDULE

This position requires serving Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 am

and 5 pm with occasional weekends and evenings required for special events. Sick or

personal days are allowed, but members lose possible days to earn the required

number of hours needed to successfully complete the term of service. There are

additional benefits offered if the member has a compelling personal circumstance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Outreach and Recruitment Navigator

Within the first week of service, complete training on RIVA AmeriCorps’s mission, recruitment strategy, and best practices for outreach and engagement.

Prospective Site Outreach and Recruitment

  • Map existing relationship within RIVA during the 1st week of service
  • Contact each RIVA staff and board member within the following 2 weeks to get the organization name and the individual contact person of at least 3 organizations that might be interested in AmeriCorps
  • Obtain permission to use their name as a referral for outreach
  • Document responses and incorporate them into the prospective outreach database
  • Research and create an initial list of organizations that align with RIVA AmeriCorps’s mission and goals within the following 2 weeks.
  • Conduct outreach to prospective sites via email and phone to secure meetings with the Program

College Outreach and Member Recruitment

  • Secure a member recruitment presentation at 3 college programs by April 30th
  • Compile existing list of colleges and universities with programs that align with RIVA’s AmeriCorps service opportunities within the 1st week.
  • Create College recruitment key talking points and presentation materials within the following week
  • Coordinate AmeriCorps members and alumni to participate in recruitment presentations in May.
  • Collect and forward the interest list from recruitment events to the Resource Navigator within 24 hours after the presentation.
  • If no members or alumni are available, conduct the recruitment presentation personally.
  • Secure a member recruitment presentation at least 8 college programs from June 1st to October 3rd
  • Research and create a database of colleges and universities with programs that align with RIVA’s AmeriCorps service in June and July
  • Identify and document contact persons at each college for recruitment presentations
  • Contact college representatives to discuss and secure member recruitment presentations by
  • Coordinate AmeriCorps members and alumni to participate in recruitment presentations
  • Collect and forward the interest list from recruitment events to the Resource Navigator within 24 hours after the presentation.
  • If no members or alumni are available, conduct the recruitment presentation personally.

Tracking and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all outreach efforts, including contact attempts, responses, and scheduled meetings.
  • Provide a weekly outreach status update to the Program Manager during weekly meetings, including key metrics such as the number of organizations contacted, meetings secured, and recruitment presentations scheduled.
  • Submit a monthly outreach report summarizing progress, challenges, and recommendations for improving outreach strategies.

Continuous Improvement

  • Regularly review and refine outreach strategies based on effectiveness and feedback from prospective sites, colleges, and the Program Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be high school graduate, GED recipient, working on attaining a diploma

or GED during term of service

  • At least 17 years of age at the commencement of service
  • Citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States
  • Satisfy the National Service Criminal History Check
  • Spanish proficiency preferred
