Summary
Install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures following blueprints and wiring diagrams for commercial and industrial facilities. Ensure that work is in accordance with relevant codes.
Primary Responsibilities
- Assemble, install, test, and maintain electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, and fixtures, using hand tools and power tools
- Construct electrical control panels
- Diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components, using test equipment and hand tools, to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem
- Connect wires to circuit breakers, transformers, or other components
- Inspect electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes
- Advise management on whether continued operation of equipment could be hazardous
- Test electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, and ammeters, to ensure compatibility and safety of system
- Maintain current electrician’s license or identification card to meet governmental regulations
- Plan layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, based on job specifications and local codes
- Direct and train workers to install, maintain, or repair electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures
- Prepare sketches or follow blueprints to determine the location of wiring and equipment and to ensure conformance to building and safety codes
- Use and operate a variety of tools and equipment such as power construction equipment, measuring devices, power tools, and testing equipment including ohmmeters, voltmeters, and ammeters.
- Install ground leads and connect power cables to equipment, such as motors
- Perform business management duties such as maintaining records and files, preparing reports, and ordering supplies and equipment
- Repair or replace wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using hand tools and power tools
- Work from ladders, scaffolds, and roofs to install maintain or repair electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures
- Place conduit (pipes or tubing) inside designated partitions, walls, or other concealed areas, and pull insulated wires or cables through the conduit to complete circuits between boxes
- Construct and fabricate parts, using hand tools and specifications
- Fasten metal or plastic boxes to walls to electrical switches or outlets
- Provide preliminary sketches and cost estimates for materials and services
- Provide assistance during emergencies by operating floodlights and generators, placing flares, and driving needed vehicles
- Draw, interpret, and read graphic instructions such as blueprints, schematic drawings, layouts, or other visual aids
- Perform heavy manual labor requiring manual dexterity under varying weather conditions
- Perform physical inventory of materials
- Comply with company, customer, and OSHA safety requirements
- Observe, compare, or monitor data to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards
- Participate in company-related safety/medical tests (e.g. background & drug screenings, physicals, hearing tests, etc.)
- Other duties as assigned
Job Specifications
- Possess a current State of Iowa journeyman or master electrical license
- Must have at least 4 years of experience with commercial and industrial projects
- Possess basic reading, writing, arithmetic skills acquired through high school diploma or GED
- Know the practices, methods, tools, materials, and equipment of the Electrician’s trade
- Knowledge and compliance with the occupational hazards and OSHA requirements of the Electrician’s trade and necessary safety precautions
- Knowledge and compliance with state and local codes
- Knowledge and compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC)
- Know electronic theory and terminology
- Able to work outside the traditional work schedule which includes nights, weekends, and/or holidays
- Able to take on-call shifts
- Able to travel to job locations that will require overnight stays
- Possess a valid driver’s license
- Able to take classes regarding electrical codes, safety programs, manufacture–specific training, management training, and others deemed necessary
- Able to perceive the full range of the color spectrum
- Able to perform precise arm-hand positioning movements and maintains static arm-hand position (e.g. operating an electric hand drill)
- Able to make continuous or repetitive hand-wrist movements (e.g. using a screwdriver)
- Able to make skillful, controlled manipulations of small objects (e.g. screws, bolts, washers, nuts, and inserts them into a small hole)
- Able to bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time
- Able to lift arms above shoulder level (e.g. working on ceiling wiring system)
- Able to work in small, cramped areas
- Able to climb or raise up to reach objects above eye level
- Able to work at heights greater than ten feet (e.g. working in a bucket truck or on a ladder)
- Able to move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) long distances (more than 20 feet)
- Able to push or pull cart loaded with equipment
- Able to work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others
- Possess good communication skills, be able to understand, speak, read and write fluent English
- Possess basic PC skills including Microsoft Word and Excel
- Able to perform tasks and work with minimal or no supervision
- Able to work cooperatively with others and possess a good teamwork mentality
- Able to meet deadlines
- Possess exemplary organizational skills
- Independent thinking and problem-solving abilities encouraged
