Description
The Assistant Controller plays a critical role supporting the Deputy CFO and Chief Financial Officer. This individual will contribute to or manage various accounting related functions including monthly reporting and account reconciliations, preparing financial statements, accounting analysis, financial data analysis, budgeting, accounts payable, fixed assets, and assisting with financial audits. May perform managerial duties in the absence of the Deputy CFO and is expected to provide leadership, training, and guidance to less experienced employees.
Essential Functions
- Obtains and maintains a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure of the Bank.
- Assists the CFO and Deputy CFO with directing the Bank's accounting functions to include establishing and maintaining its accounting principles and practices.
- Reviews detailed monthly expenditure reports for each department, prepares adjusting entries via the general ledger, and audits reports for coding errors and duplicate payments.
- Monitors accounts payable to ensure that invoices have been accurately posted.
- Conducts a variance analysis of actual vs. budget of financial statements.
- Updates the CFO and Deputy CFO of the preliminary monthly results, provides potential adjustments, and finalizes results.
- Assists in income tax accounting matters.
- Monitors system controls for ensuring data integrity and confidentiality at all times.
- Serves as a liaison to functional leadership across the organization, assisting them with accounting related service issues.
- Interprets financial transactions and events for users who must make economic or business decisions.
- Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, partnering with Risk Management, Compliance, and Audit teams.
- Coordinates activities in the preparation of periodic audits by internal and external entities.
- Ensures that record systems and procedures are maintained in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and regulatory requirements.
- Other tasks and projects as requested and supervised by the CFO or Deputy CFO. Assists the Deputy CFO in preparing annual budget projections based on input from executives.
- Assists the Deputy CFO in managing the Bank’s facilities.

Requirements
- Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Business, Accounting, or relevant discipline.
- Minimum of three to five years of public accounting experience, or equivalent is required.
- Valid Driver’s License and insurance required
- Previous accounting experience in the banking industry is preferred.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or current pursuant of CPA license is preferred.
- Comprehensive understanding of GAAP.
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills.
- Exceptional multi-tasking and organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple projects and prioritize accordingly while meeting deadlines within a fast-paced environment.
- Strong data processing experience and skills; including thorough knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex or ambiguous situations.
- Shows initiative and demonstrates a willingness to take ownership and drives improvements independently.
- Strong communication and organizational skills; detail-oriented with a high degree of accuracy.
- Knowledge of Federal, State and municipal laws and statutes as they apply to financial reporting.
- Ability to work and complete tasks with little supervision and/or in collaboration with other team members.
