IDD Care Extenders
Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) Care Extenders will provide interventions which promote socialization, wellness, self-advocacy, development of natural support, and maintenance of community living skills. The Care Extender will utilize personal life experiences to help foster a relationship of trust and support, identify strengths and unmet needs, build connection, confidence and hope for the individual with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Responsibilities:
- Advocate for people with disabilities.
- Share resources and building skills.
- Build community and relationships.
- Lead Peer groups in relationships, employment, abuse/neglect/exploitation, advocacy.
- Mentor and set goals.
- Train staff from the perspective of being supported in waiver services.
- Provide emotional and social support to individuals with whom they share a common experience.
Technical Competencies:
- Ability to assist and supervise individuals with daily living activities.
- Knowledge of agency confidentiality policies.
- Ability to build relationships with community providers.
- Knowledge of pertinent state, federal and local laws, rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of area program.
- Ability to prepare area specific training.
- Knowledge of available resources.
- Ability to provide training to individuals and staff.
- Ability to communicate.
- Knowledge of various recreational activities.
- Ability to plan recreational activities for individuals.
- Ability to participate in supportive guidance, program planning meetings, and service training.
- Knowledge of agency safety policies and procedures.
- Conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to complete participant orientation sessions.
- Ability to recognize contributions and celebrate accomplishments.
- Knowledge of agency accepts group/interview techniques.
- Ability to develop teaching aids.
Location/Schedule:
- 430 Hazel Street, Macon, GA.
- Sunday-Saturday (Part-time) 1st Shift 7am-4pm or 8am-5pm.
- 2nd Shift 2pm-11pm or 3pm-12 Midnight.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or GED or Certificate of Completion required.
- Must have a diagnosis of Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities; may have a dual diagnosis of mental health and IDD.
- Provide 2 professional references.
- Valid identification.
Career Development Criteria:
- Complete agency-specific required training and certifications.
- Peer Mentor training
- Attend seminars.
- Group facilitation training.
- Conflict resolution training.
- Obtain any relevant certifications.
